On my father’s side. Not to far back. The slave masters wur reproducing with the slaves. So here I am…
Not too far back…my people were slaves too. I’m Irish, scottish, jewish, and italian.
Before the blacks were slaves, we were slaves.
Both are extremely terrible, and slavery is terrible.
But I’m proud of my people for overcoming and making it out of a bad predicament.
Blacks are at a disadvantage because they were more recently slaves, but all my ancestors were slaves RIGHT before blacks were slaves, and we turned out pretty damn good.
I’m not saying this to belittle you or nothing, just a sense of encouragement and accomplishment
If us Jew/Italian/Irish/Scottish could be slaves in the past 500 years and make it to livin lavish, so could black people…
Some jews were slave owners, but my jewish heritage were recently slaves…we didn’t move to america until the 20th century…to escape the poverty and mistreatment of European elites.
History 201.
Knowledge is power
Racism is horrific and the main reason why the world is so unfair and screwed up. And yes, knowledge is power.
It seems like every time I hear a white person talk about his or her ancestry he or she gives a list of many different white ethnicities - Irish, Swedish, German, Scottish, and so on. It seems like where I live most people have about a quarter German in them. I do. But the dominant strain in me is probably the Scotch Irish - the Calvinist Presbyterian. I’ve got an eighth Chickasaw Indian in me too.
German is the most common ethnicity in the United States.
But I’m a New Yorker so I’m a (recent) immigrant aka no German in me. I’m Irish, scottish, Italian, Polish (jewish), Russian (Jewish) and Latvian (Jewish).
A lot of Jews owned slaves in America, but my family were those poor jews in europe who came through ellis island around the turn of the 20th century to look for a better life.
I don’t deserve any credit for my family being poor, because my family is quite wealthy nowadays, but we definitely “overcame” some ■■■■. My grandfather grew up dirt poor on my dads side and my mom grew up dirt poor…and we ended up being somewhat rich.
BBC is probably the black ultima ratio against racism!!
I was raised to be proud of my Irish heritage. I got pretty caught up in that pride and all through high school (the height of my psychosis) I supported the IRA and wanted to join them as soon as I graduated. I hated the British as if they had done every terrible thing they did to me and my family. I’ve settled down since then. History is full of terrible things, just as is the future. The more that humans can understand their common humanity rather than their geographical/cultural differences (and appreciate those differences instead), the better off the world would be…
Loved this quote! I agree and I live in a diverse city where I am lucky enough to have experienced many cultural events from many other cultures. I look forward to the cultural events in my city. The events welcome all races and the food is always a-ma-zing (my favorite part of a different culture? the FOOD)
Where do you live @HQuinn? I used to live in the San Francisco area and had some of that experience. I miss that!
I live in the central valley of California.
Lots of Anglos, Hispanics, SouthEast Asians, East Indians, and Middle Eastern people…which means lots of delicious specialty restaurants! I love pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) and street tacos sold out of a mobile truck so much. lol
EDIT: oops I forgot African Americans are a big population (how could I forget???), and people from Far Asia (i.e. from Japan). We get a lot of international students, too for the university around here
I love a variety a foods as well- Asian food especially! And Mediteranian-yummy! I don’t like British food though
I don’t get what’s wrong with skin colour. I guess people have always found ways to set them apart from the rest. lack of insight and wisdom. whatever… the world is changing. I always wanted to have a black boyfriend… I like metis too. I like red headed girls who are naturally pale… beauty in everything.
Just a couple of weeks ago, I had a discussion with one of my lebanese friends… she said she can never get close to someone black. I didn’t reply her at all or give my opinion.
whaaaa? you don’t like sausages with baked beans? lol *I watch supersize versus superskinny (a dieting show from The UK) and they always have some british people who eat a massive plate of this very thing lol
Ok, you got me. I like Shepherd’s Pie too. (It’s just still hard to admit.) Oh, and I love Indian food, which is practically British since it’s so popular there. Curry over jasmine rice…I’m getting hungry. I live in a little mountain town now and we have no variety whatsoever…You’re so lucky!
lol, i was actually rummaging through the fridge just now, while thinking about how a sausage for breakfast sounds pretty good!
I am grateful for my California heritage! That’s rough about not having variety, but the mountain view must be nice!!
It’s pretty here, and it’s quiet. As I get older I need simplicity, so I can’t complain. Good luck finding that sausage…and eggs, and potatoes and tomato???
Ok I’m not PC and someone will probably check my white middle class privilege on this forum.
As I was from a nice middle class area the first Black what we used to have to call coloured kids were from a local children’s home. They had been relocated from bad areas in London, for things like their parents being in prison for drugs offences etc. I made a friend, who became a childhood girlfriend from one of the local homes.
I never thought anything of it, that was until I got to university. Then I had a bad experience of my flatmate going to stab me. Furniture was kicked at him and he backed down after some shouting on my part, the army training kinda kicked in.
When it came to him being kicked out it suddenly became a racism issue. I’d never considered myself to be racist or would even dream of using the term negro to describe someone. But quoting these rap artists he was just some punk assed ■■■■■■ from the hood, who lived with his grandparents and managed to get in. I do know he wasn’t accepted from other university’s after interviewing him. So I was just unlucky that he ended up in the student house I lived in.
Anyway It all ended up with me moving back into halls (dorms) at university and 6 weeks later I had my first psychotic episode. I suspect he triggered my prodromal phase after the first incident after which things like my grades and social skills just declined.
