Pretty sure my dad needs a hearing aid

Been noticing lately that he isn’t hearing things.

Like, when his watch alarm goes off, he doesnt hear it. It just goes off until I say something to have him shut it off.

We were watching “Fallout tonight” and he kept asking what people said.

Several times recently I have said things to him and he appears to not hear me as he does not react.

Anyway, my dad is 71 but proud. Tonight I said “I don’t want to offend you, but I think you are getting close to needing a hearing aid. Like you couldn’t hear what they were saying on tv”

He said something like “I could hear them they just talked too fast”

Then I said, “Well, you dont hear your watch alarm going off and stuff”

And he said “I hear it sometimes, its just on the wrong side.”

Anyway, I think he is just not wanting to admit he has hearing loss. HEaring loss it linked to dementia too, so I would really like for him to get a hearing aid as quickly as we can get him to, as he is getting older.

I just found out last month that I need a hearing aid for my right ear…at 50. The audiologist thinks a car accident I had in 2018 where I hit my head might have caused it cuz she said there’s an “air bone gap” whatever that is. I’ve noticed that I was having trouble hearing speech on the TV even tho I could hear the sound effects, and I’d turned the captions on. So I got it checked out. I liked what the audiologist said, that it’s no different than getting glasses if you can’t see. So it’s coming in next month and Medicaid is paying for it. To me it’s not a big deal, but I’ve never really been bothered by stuff like that, I’m a rather pragmatic person. But I think if other people were telling me that I needed it, I might have been resistant to the idea…IDK.

You are a good child to reach this to your dad. My dad would slap me for suggesting he has hearing loss. I have seen online on pocket via firefox new page that now is an excellent time in hearing aid technology

My father needs hearing aides but we’ve decided not to get any
What do you expect at 90

Excellent. When you want to do something you know he won’t approve of, just say, “well I told you on ____ day.” He likely knows he is hard of hearing but refuses to deal with it so you’ll be allowed to skate on whatever it is.

I need hearing aids but can’t afford them.

I have mild hearing loss in one ear and mild to moderate hearing loss in the other

I miss a lot of things people say but I only ask what once because they get upset when I don’t hear.

I watch tv with the captions on and that helps a lot.

Is your dad opposed to captions on the tv?

You could say you like them because people don’t speak clearly and just turn them on.
