Prescription costs outside the US?

I have always heard that the US pays more for drugs than anyone. To give you an example of costs I picked two of the more expensive medications. The lowest cost I could find in my area for 2 mg of generic Abilify (lowest dose) was $678. The lowest cost I could find in my area for 1.5 mg of generic Invega tabs (lowest dose) was $991. These are the cash prices, obviously with insurance you get it at discounted rates. Even so, this seems expensive to me.

I found these prices on a pretty cool website. https://www.rxpricequotes.com/

Honestly, if I weren’t on Medicaid I wouldn’t be able to afford either of these medications. Luckily there are some much cheaper alternatives.

So if you live outside the US, how do SZ medication costs compare to the US? If you have nationalized healthcare, can you even see the costs?

My wife was prescribed Abilify here in the US but we couldn’t afford it.

So what did you do?

Here in portugal the government pays for most of the costs of all meds. So my Invega shot is 300€ and I pay 30€ and it’s one of the most expensive.

She then tried Risperdal, Xyprexa, Geodon, (for an alternative treatment to Lithium for Bi-Polar disorder) but she had severe side effects to all three and her doctor decided to keep her on Lithium even though she’s been on it “too long.”

Costs me nothing in the UK because I’m on sickness benefits. If I wasn’t then I believe each item on a script costs around £8 whether its a months worth or weekss worth or whatever. So something like 11 or 12 $ for each medicine

It’s so sad that in the richest country on the planet that we can’t have a better healthcare system that helps everyone.

China’s the richest  US comes second … according to the IMF

I second @zenmind. Prescriptions are free in uk if you are on benefits.

In fact where I live in Scotland prescriptions are free regardless of your working status.

I looked up the conversion to dollars and it looks almost even. So the cost is only $327 dollars? And you only pay $32?

That’s excellent! I’m glad you have access to a good healthcare system.

Since I’m on Medicaid, I pay nothing, but for those who have to pay cash, it must be very difficult. I think if our country focused on healthcare as much as we focus on defense spending, we would have the best healthcare system in the world. Very sad commentary about my country.

Well one problem is we see ourselves as the protector of the World and feel we have to extinguish every hot spot with the exception of parts of Africa and South America. We patrol the seas, and are trying to fix the impossible situation in the Middle East. We’ve been bombing ISIS every day for well over a year. Just imagine how much that costs every day. Although they are about the worst group imaginable it’s not inconceivable that they could be replaced if they are ever destroyed with an even worse group, We also try to keep Russia boxed in and not allow them to control territory they’ve kept for centuries. The social decay in the US from an overpriced medical system, a falling down infrastructure and a poor public education system could someday cause the US to collapse from within and make our strong military meaningless. I will have to say however that the factories that are heavily polluting China used to heavily pollute the US and China can keep them as far as I’m concerned.

I don’t care for your nation’s Tibetan policy but I’m glad we haven’t had a dust up in the South China Sea yet. I’ve heard you guys are trying to challenge our navy by building a big one yourselves. If you continue your military buildup you may see your drugs go up too and your country become number 2 to a more pacifist one. Just a friendly warning. And by the way a naval confrontation with us wouldn’t be pretty.

Portugal has a Tibetan policy? And they are building up their military? Never heard about this
