Poor impulse control

I seem to have no impulse control. Is this possibly part of the illness? I have other cognitive symptoms but I’m not sure if this counts as one or not

Pretty sure it is. I have impulse problems since having sz but they were much much worse on Abilify.

For me it’s just acting without thinking. Like throwing whatever is in my hand at bugs or yelling out without thinking about it first

When did these start?

I’ve had them since I was about 15. They’ve been getting worse over time. Now I’m 21 and I feel like I can’t control myself anymore

My first psychotic symptoms started at age 14 and I was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 16

Its probably the sz then.

Is there any way to help it? Like all of the cognitive symptoms? I feel like I can’t think well anymore. I struggle with remembering directions and thinking of solutions to problems. Is there any way to help with these things?

I dont think so, not sure better ask your Dr.

The illness can diminish impulse control, but so can other things. Therapy is the answer.

I think I get irritated more easily on medication cos it stresses me out the negative symptoms.

So when more irritable, I think impulse control lessens. Or at least is more likely to. Because it’s easier to get fed up.

My impulse control has improved due to age and medication, but is still far from the best.

I have bad trichtillomania. I pull out huge amounts of hair. I have seen people describe this as an impulse control disorder.

Tbh I am not sure if it is but can see how it was called that

The supplement NAC is supposed to help with this @anon94176359

Thanks for the info EH. Do you know the dosage?

600mg a day generally.

Here’s the low down on side effects

My drug and alcohol issues are a part of my poor self control, impulse control. When I feel bad, I want to get away from the feeling using drugs and alcohol.

I have posted a thread before where I mentioned that SZ is a mental illness of the ego/self. Often a diminished, reduced lack of self.

If you have a reduced sense of you self, then it can lead to a poor control of the self and its impulses.

I haven’t got any solutions to this problem. But getting older and more acquainted with yourself, might reduce the lack of self control. Strengthen your impulse control.
