Was talking about this with the priest today and wondered what you all thought. We were talking about bands like Slayer, Tool, NIN, etc…
To rephrase the original question: Does listening to this kind of music lead you towards or away from truth, happiness, and love?
I voted “no” for now because I believe despair and rage are part of human life and blocking your ears from dark music doesn’t lead you torwards a truthful existence.
The priest believes that dark, satanic lyrics lead us away from God. Which I can only half-agree with.

Listening to darker music when I’m in a dark mood can help me process it and actually relieve it a little bit at times. It’s a safe way to vent it out.

I don’t agree with your priest’s specific reasoning, but I gotta be honest with you: I learned the hard way that music has a profound impact on my mental wellbeing.
Listening to mostly dark, angry, cynical music, anything from Candlemass to RATM to Radiohead (and Slayer, Tool and NIN, though I love the last two particularly and consider ænema to be a perfect song) even, tended to exacerbate depressive episodes and increase suicidal thinking for me. I can still listen to those things, but I have to space it out.
I voted yes even though I wouldn’t call it “bad”. I felt the question was asking if it can be harmful, and unfortunately, yes, I think it can.

Your priest is correct. Toss out your Beach Boys albums.

“wouldn’t it be nice if we were older”
How can you miss the Satanic themes in that?

Some fun reading for you…
I don’t buy into this, but people can find evil in pretty much anything if they try hard enough. If you enjoy the music and it makes you happy, just roll with it. Don’t let someone else’s prejudices ruin your day.

Hah… I always run into that site. Never a positive encounter.
No kidding. Me, I need to learn NOT to read the Chick Tracts I keep finding left in public washrooms, restaurant booths, etc. Nasty, depressing little things.

I think the mind is expansive and things can go wrong. I see where bad things can come from emo music, gangster rap, racist jokes going too far. It can bother me if I let it, I just choose not to.
I voted no because sometimes people just need validation about how crumby they feel.

I think it depends on the person. Strong optimistic types can easily brush away any negative energy from music.
I vote no because i love potatoes

Ah you quoted it…so the edit was pointless…
There are also different types of “dark” when it comes to music.
A lot of the Smashing Pumpkins songs are “dark” but they’re not advocating murder or suicide. They are like strong dosages of empathy in music when you can’t get it from other people. People be all like, “Your feelings don’t make sense, just think positive, Turnip,” and Billy Corgan is all like, “I totally understand you, let’s chill with this song and process the feelings.”
I voted no , because music is just entertainment like movies, video games,or sports etc.,and if people can be influenced by entertainment then the problem isnt the inlet of influence but the upbringing of the individual.
Its the parents job to teach their kids the difference between real life and entertainment.
That comment about the priest is one of the reasons that I havent been to church in decades, blocking people from learning about the different spectrums of life is more detrimental than beneficial.
i love slipknot. I dont think its bad at all

i cant answer this as yes or no… because i think it has to do with how we reflect in the music at the time.
I listen to Korn when I’m in a dark mood or dimmu Borgir.
I usually feel better after. Transmute the negative feelings
Turtles listen to Korn too when they feel like hiding in there shell
Anything darker than The Beatles, I leave alone.
