So there is 4 voter as far.but can you write also how much gain weight during this drug using.
I gained over 20kg for the first few years of using Abilify. Now I’ve been on it for 5 years, the side effect is naturally disappearing. I’ve lost 8kg so far by being on a 1600kcal diet and daily exercising. I’d like to lose 8 more kg. I think I can do it because I don’t feel as hungry as before and it’s now easy for me to get by without any snacks between meals, which was just impossible for the first few years.
I didn’t vote because I didn’t take abilify but my brother did. He described as being stuck in mud all he wanted to do was sleep all day and yes he did gain weight about 33 pounds he said. He stopped going to pdoc appointments and stopped taking the meds and lost the weight but I don’t suggest using his method.
Hi! How much weight is tricky because all anti-psychotics have made me gain weight. It all started with zyprexa…I used to be under 115 pounds at 5’2, then fast forward six months into zyprexa…about 200 pounds. Then, stopped all medicine and dropped to 135 pounds within a year. Next, got hospitalized and put on old school anti-psych meds that made me gain 12 pounds in two weeks. Finally, I got out and the new psychiatrist put me on Abilify for the first time.
I was about 155 maybe even 160 by the time I got put on Abilify back in 2008. My high weight since being on Abilify is 195 pounds in 2011 and my low weight is 145 pounds in 2012. I gained roughly 30 pounds, compared to my post-Zyprexa weight (the time when I was not taking any medicine, but was still suffering from the weight gain caused by zyprexa from the previous years of treatment).
To put things in perspective, since August, my diet has been average to slightly poor. I eat average to slightly too much but I exercise for 2 hours a day 3-5 days a week at high intensity and the lowest I got to since August is 165 pounds.
In other words, I have no exact number of weight increase, since zyprexa wrecked my metabolism (or the combo of zyprexa and extreme dieting) but I can tell you that yes, you will gain some pounds (for me it was like 35-40 pounds). It will also be hard to control eating, as the medicine makes you more likely to feel hungry and restless as a side effect (aside from my suspicion that the pills are affecting my metabolic rate as well).
Very important message from me: Exercise is a must, as most of these pills can increase the risk of diabetes. Exercise never was a part of my life at 110-115 pounds, but it is now because of all the post-medicine weight I’ve gained.
If I had to put a number on it, I’d say minimum 10-15 pounds weight gain, even with proper diet and constant exercise, based on other patients’ stories during group therapy in outpatient clinics. My own experience would make me put the number closer to 25-30 pounds of weight gain, but I’m still struggling with a good diet plan that is low in carbs and fat, so these numbers might not apply to you. In terms of weight gain though, Abilify was better than zyprexa, and it works amazing for positive symptoms. Does anyone know if there is a really powerful anti-psychotic for positive symptoms that has less weight gain effects than Abilify? Thanks!
Hope that helps some!
Abilify is usally not a big weight gaining medication, nothing like Olanzapine (Zyprexa) or Seroquel.
When I was on Abilify, I managed to lose a lot of weight, more than 70 pounds, but I was on a strict diet and exercise plan.
It seems that there are some people on this site that have gained significant amounts on Abilify - but it is really seen as a weight neutral drug - everyone is different.
