He doesn’t like the new buttonless interface, his fingers are too big and it throws off the calibration of the touchscreen, and it glitches all the time.
Does the XR have a buttonless interface? My son is pretty big- 6’2", and he’s got big hands. I’d hate for him to have this problem.
Yeah it does. I would suggest he tries it out on the display model in the store. Yeah, it’s buttonless, but all the newer phones are. @everhopeful recommended the samsung A50 when I was getting my son a phone, and I wish we had gone with that one. We ended up getting the moto z4, which is a decent phone, but there are fewer case options because it’s an off brand. The A50 was on backorder when we were buying his phone, and we needed one on his birthday.
My sister in law had the iphone 8 until she upgraded last month, and it was working well.
With iphones, they are designed to start glitching out more when the battery is worn down. You can get around this problem by manually replacing the battery for like $30. My iPhone 6s was starting to malfunction a lot, but once I replaced the battery it was fine. I still use it with no problem.
@Happy_H There is usually a price drop on existing iPhones when Apple releases new iPhones to market. So, if you could hold out until the end of March as @anon99082702 has stated, you should be able to purchase a new iPhone for your son at a relatively good discount.
That it’s interesting. They usually release new models in September or October.

I’ve an iphone XR. It’s a good phone and once your used to no home button it’s easy to use. Large phone though.
Apple has a large portfolio of products from iPhones, iPads, Apple watches, Air Pods and Macs so it is justifiable for Apple to hold 2 product events a year.
The usual September event announces the features of Apple’s best selling and highest revenue generating product, the iPhone. The Apple September event started in 2011 with Steve Jobs I believe.
