Olanzapine / Zyprexa and aggression

Has anyone had experience with this medication bringing out aggression? I stopped giving it to my son as while on it he was displaying aggression but I can’t tell if it the aggression was already there or if this brought it out. His nurse says she is not aware of it causing this.

Never heared of it. I thought Zyprexa made you less aggressive.

A Google search showed me that Zyprexa is given in the emergency room for agitation and aggression more and more frequently. It shouldn’t cause agitation. You just stopped the med without consulting anyone?

It was prescribed as a prn plus my son said it wasn’t helping and the last one made him feel sick so I stopped offering it to him.

No sweat. You’re one of the better caregivers we’ve had on here in a while. I admire your tenacity to help your kiddo. Should be every parents’ priority. I wish mine cared back in the day.

I did end up offering him one and he said yes. Says it may be helping a little bit. fingers crossed

How much is PRN’ed? 5 mg? That’s what the ED usually gives.

10 mg twice a day

Holy cow! That’s the max dose, not a PRN dose. WTF?

It’s probably the withdrawal from Zyprexa that is causing the aggression. I was on Zyprexa for a little while, and it never made me aggressive. It made me want to sleep.

When my son got aggressive, it was usually from withdrawals…not sure if it was from the meds or drugs

I personally haven’t found zyprexa to increase aggression. On the contrary, it’s something I’m to increase in dosage (PRN) for agitation.

Sorry that he’s struggling with this and hope things improve.

I’m on 5mg once a day at bedtime and it’s never made me more aggressive, just drowsy. Now that I’m able to focus on things again it can make me a little cranky if I’m interrupted, but I’ve always been like that and think a lot of people are too. When I say it made me drowsy, though, I mean REALLY drowsy. Up until recently I would have no problem sleeping for 16 hours straight after taking it before bed and would get really annoyed by that. After being on it for 4 weeks now I haven’t been oversleeping as much, but I have been setting alarms just in case. It also makes your taste buds a lot more sensitive, which can lead to weight gain if you don’t keep your appetite under control. I haven’t gained any weight and it’s meant to be one of the worse antipsychotics when it comes to that. Overall I think it’s a really good medication and hope it works out for your son. It’s fast-acting, great for sleep (though it can get a little out of hand at times), and doesn’t flatten me out or make me feel medicated like Risperdal did. It’s supposed to be good for anxiety and have antidepressant attributes, too.

I’m on Olanzapine!
Clarification:

Have you had a meds change or did you just stop?
What energy drinks does he drink isotonics or those with stimulants in?

Has he been taught to meditate? as I was more aggressive at that age and it helped me.
Is he on any nutritional supplements? Like omega 3 fish oil?

Anyway you need to pick a drug and if it’s working or partially working stick with it a while as they doesn’t act as a magic bullet for everyone!

My Psychiatrist offered to stick me on Clozaril as my 5th anti-psychotic, but I’m not willing to commit to the weekly to monthly after a year blood tests.

Anyway if you want to share it with the world, a few extra line breaks and carriage returns would be useful

I had once been on Zyprexa for about 8 months. My dose was 10mg. I felt extremely depressed in the first month and was suicidal. But the second month I got used to it and felt euphoric. I did not have aggression. Maybe 20 mg a day is too much for your son. and it was this high dose that has caused aggression to your son.

Come to think about it, Zyprexa kept me on the irritable side of things - maybe this was because I was only on 5 mg for a short while
