So I’m listening to a podcast that reads through this one book in 365 days. I’m ocd about listening to more than one of the days on one day. Make sense? Like today I listened to Day 2 but am scared for some reason to listen to Day 3 before tomorrow because “That’s How It’s supposed to Be”
Is it interfering with your ability to function if you only listen to one a day? If not, then I would say don’t worry about it. Not all OCD traits need to be tackled. Some can be ignored.
If it does interfere with your life, what type of issue does it cause? Addressing the interference is often easier than addressing the compulsion. That’s how mine works, anyways. The more I try to fight the compulsions, the worse they get, because they are fueled by anxiety, and thinking about fighting them makes me anxious, which makes the compulsions worse.
Sure. Let’s say your compulsion is to repeatedly check your stove to make sure it is turned off. This interferes with your life because you can’t leave your house for more than five minutes without rushing back to check on it.
Addressing the compulsion would be like forcing yourself to stay out without checking on the stove. That would probably mean months or years of you being technically able to go out in public, but spending the entire time worried about the stove.
Addressing the interference would be like buying a security camera and pointing it at your stove. Then, when you’re out in public, you can check your stove by opening the security app and looking at the live feed of your stove. It reduces the amount of interference it takes to check on the stove, so you can spend time meaningfully engaged in activities when you are out in public.
I don’t know if these are official terms. I just talk about them like this.
this is great! i was diagnosed at age 10 with OCD and i actually do this. i placed two cameras in my house that i turn on when i leave so i can check to make sure things havent fallen on the floor. it also helps with my paranoia over things
