Obsessed with IQ,anyone else?

Of course it can’t. No one would suggest anything as wild as that. IQ is an estimate of intelligence, and it has many very important uses besides entertainment and giving yourself an ego boost. A tool for measurement doesn’t have to be flawless to be practically useful.

You’re right, but we talk about it like it is more important than it should be.

Yes, you’re right. That we do… It’s a shame our society has become so obsessed with IQ-scores. I don’t see that as a good trend at all. It’s not time well spent.

Idk why someone would like to take an iq test except for an ego boost

Having a high IQ only means you are good at IQ tests. There are lots of different types of intelligence. From your posts on here you come across as highly intelligent, regardless of what your iq test scores might be. You also seem like a really good person to me. Like you said you are who you are, and I think you are pretty popular here.

The people publishing these tests are very aware of the discussion about how to best categorize intelligence, which has been going on for many, many decades. These tests also do measure several kinds of intelligence, but many kinds are omitted for the sake of the reliability and validity of the scores, which relate directly to the usefulness of the tests. The problem with many kinds of intelligence is not that professionals and scientists don’t believe they exist, but that they have no good ways to measure them, and including them in standard IQ tests would harm the overall usefulness of those tests. But if you’re interested in measuring, say, your emotional intelligence, there are tests for that also. They’re just not as good.

That is an annoying myth that refuses to die.

I don’t give a ■■■■ about what some number says and how smart I am.
As long as I’m happy and content.
I wasn’t going to be an astrophysicist before psychosis and while I understand the need to prove yourself after the fact I don’t get caught up in that

Well I must be stupid for trying to be nice then :frowning:

No, it’s good that you’re trying to be nice. I’m just trying to inform people about how IQ tests work so that antipathy towards psychological testing hopefully doesn’t increase more than it already has.

Sorry Treebeard, I’m depressed, irritable and miserable, that was out of order. You’re right in challenging my mistake, I would do the same.

I’m sorry you’re feeling that way. :slight_frown: Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Treebeard.

That’s a healthy attitude to have. A lot of it for me is down to low self esteem, and the feeling of being fundamentally inferior.

I do think having a probable learning difficulty(learning disability in US terms) adds to the " Am I smart or am I dumb ?" debate that rages in my head.

I don’t think you’re dumb at all. You’ve never given me that impression.

Fire monkey it’s my opinion but I’ve heard others say this too. In order to even have a mental illness you have to have a mind. There are many people out there who don’t even really have the ability to think in there own who don’t have sz.
The fact that you have a interest in scientific news articles and you supply issues other members with the most recent news speaks volumes about your capacity. Again this is just my opinion but I’d be willing to bet that you use mental muscles that most people have no idea they even have

When I was young I had a high IQ. Haven’t bothered to check anymore but I’m sure it’s way lower than before after all the alcohol, pot and meds. When I was three I came out on the local newspaper because I could read in English and Spanish, do math, and I knew about astronomy, dinosaurs were a pad my time. I wanted to be a paleontologist, I was even offered a scholarship to Stanford university based on that article. Sadly I didn’t apply my intelligence much in school. I did graduate with a 3.8 GPA but I know I could have done much better. In middle school I was one of the top test scorers in the nation. It’s been years since that. My IQ must be lower now. I think intelligence doesn’t really matter, what matters is hard work and dedication. Unfortunately I can’t seem to do either these days. I’m not obsessed with IQ at all. To be my friend there is no IQ requirement. I don’t even remember the planets in order anymore lmao. When I was in elementary I skipped two grades but I started crying because I missed my friends so they move me back. What a wimp.

My illness made me appear to have a low IQ which was raised considerably by the meds lowering the interference of the voices. Now idleness is lowering my IQ again. I once heard a lecturer in a Psych Ward describing people with psychosis as having genius iQ’s but being unable to show it due to the disorder.

Don’t let it get to you. I think you have a good IQ. I never had a in person accurate IQ test only ones online. I like to believe mine is above average because I score well on them and have an advanced degree. Are you taking care of yourself and are you enjoying yourself. That seems to be what matters. I will say that I bombed the genes for good tests that were similar to IQ tests. It made me feel really dumb.

I already did a IQ test just for fun and I noticed there were many problems and I believed that it could not tell at all if someone is intelligent.

However, while I was in hospital because of my illness, a neurologist made me have a cognitive test and I got very high results.

And the neurologist told me that she noticed that most people who have a mental illness are usually extremely intelligent. What do you think about that? Do you agree? Have you been told the same?

However, what is the importance of being intelligent? What’s important is to love and to be loved… Am I wrong?

Truer words never spoken.
I vote you for president.
