Not just copying someone

Having had an older sister, I wanted to copy everything that she did. She didn’t like me copying her. So I shied away from being like her which left out a lot of activities for me. Now, I’m “daring” to copy her but with the idea that the activity is self motivating and has nothing to do with her. It’s work to do this, though. It’s just not healthy to be so opposite and different.

I’m the youngest of seven, @PinCushion. I have three older sisters and three older brothers. It never occurred to me to copy any of them. If I shared an interest with any one of them, it wasn’t my fault that they were born first. I wasn’t copying, just similarly interested. If I had different interests, which I mostly did, it wasn’t to be opposite. Everything we are doesn’t have to be in relation to anyone else.

It can be healthy as long as being opposite and different isn’t the reason that makes you be that way. Then you are just being controlled by someone.

You are lucky to have been free to develop as an individual. I was too frightened. I needed someone to lean on, to support, to allow, to approve.

I wanted to be seen as “good”, and so I was good. I was very compliant and well behaved. Other than that, I was oblivious. I do think that’s one thing my mom got right: she encouraged all of her kids to be individuals.

Now it’s myself who can’t understand you. Let’s drop it. :slightly_smiling_face:

My sister and I are naturally opposites. I’m older than her and she never copied me. In anything. When we were little, our mother dressed us exactly alike and had us do the same things, (dance lessons, swim lessons, crochet lessons, etc…) But, when we got older, we dressed differently and did different things and thought differently. But, our personalities are still strangely alike in a lot of ways.

I was blessed with parents who accepted their children as individuals…I played with GI Joe and Matchbox cars while my sister had all the Barbie dolls. We were allowed to develop our interests without too many "no"s…also we were not indoctrinated into a specific religion so we got to find our own beliefs growing up.

Then why the skull for an avatar?

Actually, I have a full-size skeleton that rides shotgun with me in my truck, and it makes so many people laugh and smile when they see him so the “laughing skull” is simply a pic of his head. It’s a little crazy but fits well with everything else that I do that comes across as crazy. I’d rather make others laugh than cry. I admit, it does get a FEW weird looks when I drive!
