I’m not sure if I want kids but I think it’s a little bad that risperidone stops my period if I do plan on having kids in the future. My mental health is definitely most important but also I know it’s healthy to have periods. Is spotting similar to periods? Does the uterus shed its lining during spotting? I’m gonna be taking a new oral birth control and I hope I at least get some spotting. I just need the period to confirm I’m not pregnant haha. I don’t want to waste money on pregnancy tests. What do you guys think? Is it a big deal to stop getting your period?
I’m a guy, and medication has definitely reduced my sperm count. I don’t ejaculate nearly as much as I used to. One time when I was in the hospital I told one of the aids that the med’s I was taking were really diminishing my sexual performance. She treated it like it was no big deal, but it was a big deal to me. Your sexuality plays a large role in your happiness. Now I’ve made peace with my diminished sexuality, but I wish the treatment people would show more interest when I tell them a med is interfering with my sex drive.
Maybe a good way to get their attention would be to say, “Well okay, but if risperidone takes away my ability to have babies I’m going to file a gargantuan lawsuit against the company that makes the drug.” It might be a little dicey, but I think you’d win.
my doc treated it like it was no big deal too. but to me it is.
When I was super heavily medicated, my periods were lighter and not as consistent,
I did get pregnant during this time.
Trust me, a pregnancy test is never a waste of money,
Its worth the peace of mind.
Risperdal and invega can increase prolactin which can cause your periods to stop. I know I was on both had the same problem. My doctor lowered my dose of invega sustenna to 78 mg and my periods started again. I was suggest going to the dollar tree store for pregnancy tests. They are only a dollar and they are pretty reliable. They have pretty good reviews. I had an iud inserted in June. I haven’t had a period since. But that can happen when your on that kind of birth control.
I believe one of the side effects of risperidone is hyperprolactinaemia which may result in dysfunctional menstrual cycles like secondary amenorrhea. Doctors usually discontinue the medication and replace it with a more suitable one.We had a lecture on side effects of anti psychotics when I was doing psychiatry posting in medical school
You can have breakthrough bleeding while pregnant. That’s why you get people that think they had there period even though they were pregnant. If you think you’re pregnant and can’t afford a pregnancy test talk to your doctor. They can either give you one or direct you to a clinic that will.
Hmmm … I’m on Invega and I don’t get a period either. But my prolactin levels are normal, I get them tested evey six months and just got the results for the most recent. They’ve never been high.
