Work was an average day. Had some laughs with my co-workers, was alone most of the day and as usual, near the end of the day the boss had me do, what I like to call, “bullsh*t” work. He was busy on the computer so he had me do stuff that really didn’t need doing. And he told me to take my time doing it!
After work I met my sisters at the park for our weekly walk and had a good conversation afterwards. I like to be friendly so I usually say hi or smile at other people walking as we pass by. That’s just what I do.
I had to remember what I learned. Just because someone looks like a biker or some tough hood doesn’t mean they want to cause trouble. People can’t help how they look and 80% of the time they just want to walk around like everybody else and they’re not looking for a fight or trying to scare anyone. I used to have a bad habit of being scared of those guys and I tended to glare or get defensive. But now I either don’t look at them or give them a friendly look.
On a related note, I never know when someone’s going to like me, the people I least expect it from are really friendly to me. There was this guy at the board & care home four years ago, a young guy, maybe 22 or 23. I thought he was pretty cool but never really got to know him.
I was forced to move down the street and one day I walked into the bathroom which was large and one of the other residents was in there and this guy was in there talking to him. To tell you the truth I thought they were making a drug deal but I wasn’t sure but the other resident asked the 22 year old a question about me and the younger guy says, Yeah, he’s cool." It was kind of unexpected. Surprised me. I thought, “That’s pretty cool.”
I never know who I’m going to impress.
