I would say it’s called Acute Stress Disorder because “nervous breakdown” seems to me to be a short-term reaction to a traumatic event that causes significant stress and impairment.

In the early years of being diagnosed mentally ill my sickness certificates sometimes said ‘nervous debility’.

“Nervous debility” is an old-fashioned term that typically refers to a general state of physical and mental weakness, often linked to exhaustion of the nervous system. It was historically associated with symptoms like:
 Fatigue and lethargy
:worried: Anxiety or irritability
:face_with_crossed_out_eyes: Headaches, dizziness, or insomnia
:beating_heart: Palpitations or restlessness
 Low mood or malaise
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this condition was often diagnosed under the name neurasthenia, especially in Western medicine. It was thought to result from the stresses of modern life—urbanization, overwork, and intellectual strain. Some even nicknamed it “Americanitis” due to its prevalence among professionals and city dwellers.

This makes sense. I thought and still think psychology needs to focus and specialize in psychosis and delusional states. Stress is good and bad. Knowing the difference has turned my life from dissatisfaction to appreciation. For me to make things short bad stress breaks me down and exhausts me and destroys me and leaves me stagnant in life. Good stress takes my mind off of wasteful thinking and actions and leads me to constant building ànd improvement.
