National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)

If you can’t afford group therapy, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is an awesome group to join- very supportive. Maybe there’s one near you. If you’ve been to this group, do share your experience.

When I first started recovering from my first episode, I went to a NAMI group for people in my area. It was mostly family members there, but I did get good pointers from the facilitator. She introduced me to United Self Help where I now attend support group for consumers. People there were much more in recovery. My favorite is Women’s Group, I recommend that one if it’s in your area. Most women there are very resilient and funny and there’s always talk about work and relationships. Nami has good conferences and classes for family, I heard. I’m thinking about volunteering there if anyone knows something about that.

Their meetings are too late where I live. Too close to bedtime.

I’ll have to look in to United Self Help too. The NAMI group where I live, had only those who suffered with mental illness in attendance…of course there was the staff too.

Sure, they’re a good organization, very helpful and supportive. They help the families of mentally ill people also. They try to educate people about mental illness.

I went here a few times, people who are involved in the meetings start to be a big part of the organization. They are so supportive, and ask important questions about your life, keep up With your life

They helped my parents more than they helped me. They educated my parents and gave them more understanding, compassion, and empathy towards me and others. I cannot thank them enough.
