NAC may become hard to get in the US

If you take NAC and buy from a US supplier you may want to stock up - if you can find it.

Amazon (US) has eliminated it from their products. None seems to be available on Walmart anymore. Local health food shops are selling out.

There’s a little still available on iherb.

The FDA is possibly going to regulate it as a medicine. Guess it got too popular during COVID.

I think it’s easy to ramp up the production if needed. I don’t think they need to extract specific constituents from other sources, I’m pretty sure all amino acids can be made up in a laboratory, but maybe it takes a while to get the production rate up to meet the need in the market.

Wow. Luckily I tried it and it didn’t work out. I don’t understand why they want to regulate it though.

That stuff is nasty. I couldn’t stand taking it.

I bought a package, but I’m afraid trying it out. I have depression, not SZ, and take escitalopram. And thyroxine. And insulin. And enzymes for digestion. Too many drugs already )))

I don’t think it’s so much a shortage as that its popularity has expanded and the FDA felt the need to flex.

There’s a lot of people that will be affected. People take it for COPD, autism, schizophrenia, bronchitis and OCD.

LS! I just bought 250 capsules NAC Now Foods at 15 euros from iHerb. For my stock. Just in case it becomes hard to get. It tends to get spoiled though, black spots on the capsules. Maybe only if the temperature is too high.

I don’t think it will be a problem in Europe. AFAIK there are no plans to change the status in Europe. Also there are some NAC manufacturers in Europe so you guys won’t be dependent on the US supply (which is probably mostly Chinese anyway).

I would be suspicious about the black marks on capsules, that doesn’t seem like normal spoilage. Usually it will smell strongly fishy when it gets old, which is not harmful but a sign it will be less effective. Most of the degradation is from exposure to oxygen.

If the FDA goes through with this, US consumers won’t be able to buy over the counter but doctors will still be able to prescribe it.

NAC is a must for me. Damn FDA and their money grubbing hands.

I tried nac for a few months years ago. I took 4000mg a day. I dunno if that was too much lol but I didn’t notice anything.

Change.org has a petition to allow NAC to be sold as a supplement.
