Yesterday I heard about an elderly man with a metal detector in Scotland found a Viking’s treasure load. I also heard about a ship wreck that had some kind of ancient “computer” on board. I think it’s for navigation? Not sure…anyways, what mysteries have you heard about?
Ron Wyatt apparently found the ark of the covenant There are lots of youtube videos about it. Pretty cool stuff.
My kid sister is all about the British woman who discovered and helped refurbish the temple of Om Setti.
She and my youngest brother are wanta-be Egyptologist anyway. They can amuse each other for hours with talk about Egyptian digs.
I’m sort of interested in visiting gobekli tepe, but turkey is definitely NOT safe for tourism lol…
My brother and sis have been saving up their pennies to visit Egypt eventually in life… of course they know better then to go now.
My gf and I are speaking of traveling after all our cats pass on and I think it would be a great time. I’d love to see old world things and have been to Europe before when I was young. I think it was completely worth it!
The Antikythera mechanism is what I’m assuming your talking about. It is an ancient analog “computer” designed to predict astronomical…things…was built around 100 to 150 bc I believe.
I used to be way into archaeological mysteries…over a decade ago…seems I don’t quite remember clearly most of it though.
Why? I live in Turkey. Provided you’re not on the Syrian border Turkey is one of the safest countries in the world. It’s a lot safer than the UK or US for the average person. Very low street crime rates.
That’s the thing Hatty, the dig is in sanluurfa and they say it’s unsafe. I’d like to prove them wrong lol.
Ah yes, Şanliurfa has been on my list of places to visit for about seven years now but about 5 years ago there was a sudden uptick in PKK (Kurdish) terrorism and now recently it’s been connected with the Syrian problems. Three years ago, I had a lovely holiday in Mardin, right on the Syrian border. It’s a stunningly beautiful city with lots of ancient Syriac churches, and a 2000 year old monastery built on top of an even more ancient Sun temple. But now it’s right in the trouble zone. It’s so saddening. So much that survived , peoples and places, under Ottoman rule for centuries, and now a bunch of raving nutters, with no authority at all are bombing everything to smithereens.
On the bright side, everywhere you sink a spade in Turkey is an archeological site. Even the recently opened Bosphorus tunnel was delayed because they found Hittite artefacts on the bed of the channel. It does tend to make all building work very slooooow, though!
I was upset to find out the German archaeologist Klauss Schmitt had passed away this summer. He was the first to dig in Sanliurfa at a big temple site with beautiful figurines and columns.
