Should i mention ‘‘Schizophrenic’’ in my Resume for a job?
Absolutely not. NO. Only mention your special needs requirements after you get the job.
I mentioned it in my cover letters about a year ago when I was looking for jobs and I never got an interview. so I wouldn’t recommend it. now I will only talk about it, if it comes up in the interview. I do need special treatment, like one day off every 5 weeks to get my depot, and one day off every 3 months to see my pdoc. also I need to get off an hour early on payday so I can get to town and report my wages to social security.
This is going to be tricky.
No. That is a way to not get hired. The best way to treat it is to not put it into your resume. With all these random shooting rampages going on employers are probably reluctant to hire anyone with even a hint of mental illness. If your prospective employers ask you about, give them a truthful answer, but make sure they know you’re on med’s, and the situation is under control.
NO! From what I’ve read on here for years the majority of the time it is a huge mistake to disclose a mental illness to an employer and especially schizophrenia. If the employer is looking at 5 resumes of 5 people who are equally suitable for the job most likely he will ignore or throw the one that says “schizophrenia” in the trash. Most likely they don’t know anything but bad stuff about schizophrenia. There’s always exceptions but I’ve heard the stories of people who disclose and it’s a good way to be singled out and picked on and treated unfairly. You are under no obligation to tell a prospective employer that you have schizophrenia. In a perfect world it should not matter as long as you can pull your own weight. But this world is a million miles from perfect and stigma, ignorance, and downright meanness is alive and kicking in the work place.
Hell no. 151515
Nope. I was open about my illness at my last job (first job since getting sick). Didn’t work out. I’m not saying a word about my condition at my next job.
Look at it this way. When a company presents a commercial they claim that they are a lot of wonderful things that they can never live up to in order to get your business. When you present yourself to them you probably better be the same way. I know it’s lying but it’s how we are. We trust people more when they say they are great. So other people are the same way.
NEVER disclose a disability until AFTER you have the job. They are legally required to give you special accommodations if you’re an employee, but they don’t have to hire you if they know in advance you have a disability.
I don’t know if you should do it even then, because of office politics. If they know about it, someone is likely to use it against you. However, you might be able to get your employer a healthy tax break for hiring a disabled person. So if it looks like the winds are blowing that way you might mention your potential disability tax break to your employer. In the meantime make sure your job performance is above reproach.
They only get the tax break if you’re hired through a disability work program. But yeah you only disclose if you need special accommodations, and then you just say what accommodations you need, they can’t legally ask you why.
