How many of you tell your employers that you have schizophrenia? Is it wise to tell the people who are hiring you that you have a mental illness?
Everyone has baggage when you get to a certain age.
I’d not reveal that. I never would because most people don’t understand. Last time I left a job it was because I was stressed and paranoid. I said to them I had a weird genetic condition and was sleeping too much on medication. I exited with some dignity!
With sz and when working I took advantage of my rostered days off and my sick days. I learned to take time out when I needed it.
So. No. I wouldn’t tell them and I’d work my ass off.
I would never say until I had proved myself in a job and there was reason to.
I told my employer a few years ago as I kept getting hospitalised.
If I hadn’t of told them they may not have decided to allow me to work four days a week.
Yeah, I agree with the others; it’s not a good idea to disclose it up front. I tell employers only when it becomes necessary for them to know.
My employers know i have it, and they are very supportive of me. However, as a general rule of thumb, i wouldn’t tell your employer. Not everyone is understanding or willing to be supportive.
F*** no I never tell them. I’m too paranoid they will fire me over it.
Great answers here. Seems like it is advisable to not reveal that you have schizophrenia/mental illness to your employer unless required to do so. I don’t know about other countries, but here people with schizophrenia fall under the category of a PWD(Person with Disability) benefits if you’ve been treated for at least 2 years under a professional caring unit/psychiatrist.
And, but I’m not sure of, the company who employs you will can get tax exemptions. I wonder… do you people[where you live] get the same benefits for your employers as well? Because it seems like a win-win situation. Thanks everybody!
You can tell them but you wont get the job. I have been working at a new job for about 6 weeks now and I still have not told my employers. I think now I have proved my self I would feel comfortable disclosing it to them.
Its supposedly helpful to disclose it, but I wouldnt bring it up in the interview. Wait until after any probation period is over and I would personally only disclose your diagnosis if you’re struggling and need extra support.
I’ve disclosed it at two jobs. The first they actively tried to get rid of me, the second they were very supportive but it didnt work out for me still. Not because I disclosed but because I wasnt ready to work.
Please tell me it is not Tesco’s hope not good luck anyway all the best with it you will be fine
I don’t tell anyone, it has backfired on me before
Do not tell your work Pysch told me recently not to do it i did in my last 2 jobs all i got was stigma and weird looks from my bosses and fellow work collegues alike.
I definately would not bring it up at an interview.
I would work hard and try to prove your dedication. Then if issues came up maybe you can slowly tell them you have anxiety.
In my previous job I told them about my diagnosis. It turned out the store manager’s mom had sz. That worked out.
This current job I probably won’t mention it unless I have to have days off due to hospitalization.
I would err on the side of caution when telling employers. It’s best not to tell bosses or co-workers. I hate gossipers and it would lead to a lot of gossip.
I don’t but if you feel comfortable
In most cases I’d say no, not in the beginning at least because there is still way too much stigma with MI/SZ and I don’t think they’d want to hire someone that they think will get sick often/become high needs. If you’ve proven yourself after a while then you could tell your boss if you think you’d need extra supports in place/time off.
