My psychologist doesn't really listen to me

He’s on odd guy. When I tell him that I have more bad effects than benefits on a medication and that’s why I stop taking it, he gets mad at me and says I’m not taking them for long enough. And that may be true but the way he says it is not encouraging. Plus if you feel worse while you’re taking the med and it doesn’t even reduce your symptoms, should you be taking it? I want to like the guy, but he makes it difficult.

I’m on Clozaril (Clozapine) and I absolutely hate the side effects. I drool, I’m lethargic, and I sleep a lot not to mention monthly blood tests. But despite the side effects I still take the meds because they do lessen the effect symptoms have on me. It would take a few weeks for the med to affect me. So I don’t know how long you have been taking your meds. I learned a long time ago to stick with meds… If the one your currently on isn’t working let your Doctor know and try something different. I know it sucks being the guinea pig but it’s the only way for you to find out what works for you.

Tell him that you find it ironic that he’s criticizing your side effects to medication when he cannot write a script for an aspirin.

People in the helping professions should always remember that you are a human being with feelings and emotions that matter to you. You have people who love you. You want to feel important. You don’t want to feel stupid or be embarrassed. You should be respected. And it doesn’t matter if the doctor feels that you are being respected; what matters is if you feel that you are being respected.

And any doctor who cannot do that needs to find another job.

Exactly. He’s a bit on the eccentric side so maybe he doesn’t understand that’s how he comes off, but he’s been treating me for a while now so he’s probably tired of trying to treat me.

My doctor really hurt m feeling when her referred to “people like you …” putting the mentally ill in a category separate from himself when actually it was no secret to me that he had emotional problems himself. But he had to think he was better than his customers.
