My pdoc is encouraging me to date and i am nervous

I have not dated in years for a lot of reasons, not just SZ, In my younger days was the life of the party, was dating all the time.
Now not even sure if I would want to even attempt it, she would have to be pretty accepting from the start and more of a tom boy type. Doubt I would ever find that type and I’m not the type to run around chasing someone.

Should only do it if that’s what you really want, and not cause a pdoc says so, but good luck if you do.

usually online dating sites are just filled with either robots or people soliciting.

on OKcupid, I remember reporting a clear solicitor who wanted me to watch something through a webcam. worse part was that the website staff did nothing about it. that’s when I just gave up on online dating sites.

maybe there are better dating sites. but at this point in my life, I just don’t care anymore.

I disagree with you @Prince_Boring about the robots and solicitors. I have only had good experience with online dating.

I think it’s easier at your age to meet somebody online. Not taking anything away from you jukebox but I’ve been on online dating sites for seven years, I’m a decent looking guy and not a creep and dont have one single date from online dating. The girls get more serious when they get in their late 30s and 40s. I dunno maybe you’re tall dark and a supermodel like. I dunno you besides your posts.

Ive heard that having a companion can really change your perspective on life and this Illness. Best of luck on dating.

maybe Plenty of Fish is different than OKcupid, but I doubt it…

besides, my paranoid sz reflects in my behavior. anyone can smell my mental disability, from a mile away; and I’m not good at hiding things. people usually aren’t interested in mentally ill persons:

I’m trying to keep the relationship I have. For one thing, I’m pretty sure schizophrenic men who are married live longer.

We met through an ad . . .

I’ve met a few people from online dating sites. Just gotta be patient and when you talk to someone set up a meet up date right away or you will just end up talking to the next one

Yeah I look young too. Always have. They tell me patience is a virtue for us young’n lookin folk! Both my parents could pass for 20 years younger than they are, especially my mom. My dad has aged a lot the last couple years but still looks young. But my mom continues to look reallll young.

I have never had a problem with online dating. I got married to someone I met on OK Cupid. I liked that site the most because it asks a ton of questions, and it lets you be interested in men and women on the same profile. On POF I had to have two seperate accounts.

My therapist seems to think I’m the most desirable man on earth. Probably because she’s naturally attracted to my traits and knows me really well and all I’ve been through. Etc. she also tells me that my pdoc (they work together) wants nothing more for me to find a real steady girlfriend. I’m holding out for a gorgeous Costa Rican girl when I move there though

thanks for all your interesting replies. i am not sure what i am going to do just yet but online dating never appealed to me personally.

i am older by the way – going to be 59 in february.

i find it a tragedy that i don’t have any social life or husband – however, with sz maybe that’s the best thing for me presently. am not sure.

Hi Judy.

I think it all really depends on the person you are dating. Like how open they are to the illness, how educated they are about it. Stuff like that.

Take care :v:

My mom is 51, and she found a decent guy on Match.com. She met quite a few creepers first, though. The thing I like about Internet dating vs meeting someone in real life is that you can usually find out how creepy they are ahead of time. My grandpa would background check everyone any of us talked to online ahead of time.

Also, the weird ones tend to be more up front about their weirdness. I once came across a guy who was super into feet. He asked if I would be willing to try on various shoes for him and then let him smell them. I politely declined and he continued his search. If it was in person, I probably wouldn’t have found out about the foot thing until like a month of dating. It’s more efficient in that way.

Dating is a hard game no matter how you do it. You end up meeting some creepy people, some nice people who just aren’t interested, and lots of people who are just okay. But it only has to work once, and then you’ve got someone.

I got the opposite response. When I told a pdoc about my lack of sex drive he pretty much encouraged me to stop wanting to see women. Anyway not going to try until I’ve held a job for at least a year.

well then you’re in a pickle. there are few legal things you can do to get that. I think it’s best to avoid such desires that could possibly put you behind bars.

I haven’t dated a lot but I know that dating doesn’t have to be a big deal. It can be as simple as meeting up in a coffee house and just chit-chatting for an hour. It could be going to a movie together where it doesn’t require a lot of talking. Dating doesn’t have to be some big emotional deal where you have to commit to each other for life and vow to never love another but him… It’s just being friendly and talking lightly and innocently. It can be going to a park and having a picnic.

Remember, practice makes perfect.

If you’re like me, most of your social interactions are an “approach/avoidance” conflict. A lot of the time social interactions look very appealing to me, but my sz makes it impossible for me to be comfortable around people and for other people to be comfortable around me. I’m easier to like from a distance. Maybe it is for the best for you to get out and date. It might improve your enjoyment of life. You don’t want to end up like me.
