My favorite axe

It’s an SX Ursa 1 bass, essentially a Fender P-Bass copy. I modified it with a DiMarzio Split P pickup and an Omega Bass bridge (that’s the gold-plated piece of metal to the far right).

It sounds pretty close to a Fender, and with the modifications it has a lot of volume and punch.

Nice man. What sort of stuff do you play?

I know a lot of Rush songs. I like to play Geddy Lee lines on it, mostly.

I didn’t understand any of that but it looks great !

My dad when he retired bought himself a fender Japanese precision light. Is a really nice guitar.

Yes. The Japanese-made stuff is very valuable now.

Coolness. I wanna learn a musical instrument one of these days…

This bass cost me just a tad over $100… but the mods cost more than the instrument!

Must be nice to have a one of a kind self-modded instrument.

Yeah. The mods are all up to the player. The bridge (piece of metal) on it gives it a lot of extra “balls,” for lack of a better word.

Where did you learn to do modifications?

The first bass I modified was a made-in-Japan Fender Jazz Bass Special. EMG pickups were the rage in 1988, because of Steinberger basses. I thought I just had to try them, so thru my local music store I bought a PJ set and had a local luthier install them. I got in the habit of modding since that time 30 years ago.

Is there any money to be made doing modding as a job? Could you set up a business?

It’s part of what a repair tech does. One has to know how to do all those kinds of repairs, so specializing in just mods I’m not sure about. I do know that one can specialize in amp repairs or guitar repairs. Something to look into, I suppose. But with soldering pickups I still have to get help. I wanna learn, tho.

I always thought Lizzie Borden got a bum rap. It was probably the maid.

Hey Borath. After betting burned by bad repair techs, some at big name pro shops, I started doing all my stuff myself except for complete fret jobs. Gimme a shout anytime about such things. I think it would be cool to start a “guitar corner” thread to discuss and share about all things guitar if enough contributors signed on.

Very nice. Hope you enjoy. The brass was the first thing I noticed.
