It’s an SX Ursa 1 bass, essentially a Fender P-Bass copy. I modified it with a DiMarzio Split P pickup and an Omega Bass bridge (that’s the gold-plated piece of metal to the far right).
It sounds pretty close to a Fender, and with the modifications it has a lot of volume and punch.
The first bass I modified was a made-in-Japan Fender Jazz Bass Special. EMG pickups were the rage in 1988, because of Steinberger basses. I thought I just had to try them, so thru my local music store I bought a PJ set and had a local luthier install them. I got in the habit of modding since that time 30 years ago.
It’s part of what a repair tech does. One has to know how to do all those kinds of repairs, so specializing in just mods I’m not sure about. I do know that one can specialize in amp repairs or guitar repairs. Something to look into, I suppose. But with soldering pickups I still have to get help. I wanna learn, tho.
Hey Borath. After betting burned by bad repair techs, some at big name pro shops, I started doing all my stuff myself except for complete fret jobs. Gimme a shout anytime about such things. I think it would be cool to start a “guitar corner” thread to discuss and share about all things guitar if enough contributors signed on.
