They are all going out for supper to celebrate. My whole family. I just can’t go. The thought makes me ill. All those people. In the busiest restaurant in town. I told them I’m not feeling well. Which isn’t a total lie. I really do feel kinda sick today. I hate social anxiety.
I think it’s best to be honest if you can. In hs I had a friend w social anxiety but she never told us. As a result we would get frustrated with her for skipping out on social events, trips, etc. and would say she was being antisocial. Later when she told me she was struggling with it I felt so bad for guilt tripping her over it. If they care about you they’ll understand and maybe for other celebrations will have more lowkey events.
I agree with Anna. I have a friend with terrible social anxiety, so now, whenever I have a big party, I make sure to also have a quiet game night with just her and her boyfriend afterwards. That way, she doesn’t feel left out of the celebration.
yea I agree, just tell them straight up how you feel (don’t have to give them 100% details) but if they are understanding people they wont try to push you too much on it also. There are people who try to understand you, and people who “think” they understand you and treat it as a regular problem (like shyness or some insecure teenage problem).
Thank you all so very much!
