Benny and Joon is one of my all-time favorites! I cried when I first saw it.
An animated film. (It’s a strange movie, but I liked it. I thought this might be an artistic image, metaphor, of beginning of mental illness, not only schizophrenia and hallucinations, but also OCD, depression, neurosis, and even just a metaphor for life “in the urban jungle”.)

Caldera
Animated film. 2012, USA, 12 min. Directed by - Evan Viera.
The film’s director Evan Viera: «Caldera was created inspired by my father’s struggle with schizophrenia. He danced on the rings of Saturn, talked with angels, escaped from his demons and lived in a fantastyc world, which is invisible to most of us. “Caldera” - is a kind of nod to my father and all the brilliant minds who are entangled in the depths of their mind».
Documentary.
Divided Minds: Twin Sisters’ Journey Through Schizophrenia.
Pamela Spiro Wagner, a poet, and her identical twin sister, Carolyn Spiro, MD, psychiatrist.
22 march 2006, presentation at the University of Virginia. 28 min.
What is the experience of schizophrenia – from the inside, as one with the disease, but also from the perspective of one who is close to the sufferer? Identical twins Pamela Spiro Wagner and Carolyn Spiro reflect on their experiences with schizophrenia, and a bond between them stronger even than their twinship, vividly and insightfully captured in their dual memoir, ‘Divided Minds.’
(This is one of the strongest performances and documentary videos I’ve seen. At 1.50 Pam Spiro says: "… I suffer from schizophrenia "- and the girl who in the auditorium immediately changing the face… I recommend.)
“The White Sound”.
(“Das Weisse Rauschen”) - Germany, 2001, Directed by Hans Weingartner. 100 min.
Austrian Hans Weingartner, who studied neuroscience in Vienna and Berlin, and then cinematography at the Cologne Art College, made his debut in 2001 with the film “The White Sound” (Das weisse Rauschen), in which it undertook a very successful attempt to find a visual matching the inner world of a man with a sick mentality.
The young protagonist of his first film, which played brilliantly then still a novice German actor Daniel Brühl, gradually turned into a clinical schizophrenic, but the film’s author was more interested in not madness, but the inertia of others who saw that the guy is not all right, but they didn’t want and could not understand it. Peace of mind protagonist Bruhl finds in the woods or by the sea, with its soothing sound of the surf.

(That film seemed to me correctly shows the mentally illness. It is about young man who starts hearing voices, about the beginning of a mental disorder.)
I watched “Twelve Monkeys” last night, genre is best described as sf/thriller I suppose. I enjoyed the film. Don’t expect a realistic depiction of schizophrenia though. But the protagonist is a paranoid schizophrenic. Or maybe he is not…? You get the idea.
I must add Dr. strangelove to this list. The general is clearly delusional and paranoid.
Here’s a list of movies-
They left out Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film - Psycho
I always thought Norman had sz
Norman Bates supposedly had dissociative identity disorder, but some sources say his mother had sz
Is this movie about sz, what do you say ? I say yes.
Awesome movie!!!
This is a short film, was montage of the Russian-speaking Internet. We ourselves have done it. It’s a pity that I can not explain everything, frame by frame …
However, the film is called “A little bit of Schizophrenia”. And there are presented ONLY the works, and the music, too, from the people diagnosed with schizophrenia, and other similar mental disorders.
Unfortunately, It is without Eng. subs.

A Little Bit about Schizophrenia. (In Russian)
21 min, 2012.
The creativity of schizophrenics usually associated with something dark, and scary… In this film, we have tried to show how interesting, talented, versatile it can be. We hope that this will help the public better understand the inner world of people with mental disorders. Music slide show is built on the basis of creative works - music, drawings, paintings, photographs, provided by members of the Russian-speaking forums of people diagnosed with “schizophrenia.”
I actually like the movie A Beautiful Mind. Like most of us I just couldn’t really stand being called a beautiful mind. Crazy… maybe but beautiful… nah… women are beautiful, my mind is not. That being said, I thought the movie “The Science of Sleep” provides a very accurate depiction of a person out of touch with reality very similarly to a person going through an crisis. Also, the comedic movie “Stranger than Fiction” well I experience something similar to the main character of that movie.
The one main thing I liked about A Beautiful Mind was that it gave one common, realistic and personal reason as to why many people with mental illness stop taking their meds. Sexual dysfunction is a big deal, as sexuality is a huge part of the human experience for most people, it’s just a basic, instinctive, core part of life like eating food, even if someone just masturbates (nothing wrong with that). But it becomes even more significant when you’re in a relationship and can no longer connect physically, emotionally and spiritually with your partner in that way anymore. But this issue often gets totally overlooked, because it’s usually family members who are upset about refusal of meds, and most people with MI don’t want to be like, “Well look Mom I can’t ejaculate anymore on these medications.”
(Sorry, this short movie not about SZ, but Autism. However, it seems to me, this is a good animation and humanistic movie. And sorry, I couldn’t find this movie on YouTube, so necessary follow the link.)
My Little Brother From The Moon
(France, 2007, animation film, 6 minutes. With English subtitles.)

Frédéric Philibert, a parent of an autistic boy, made this wonderful animated film for 5 minutes. “The little girl is trying to understand why his younger brother - autist not like other children and gives his version of events.”
The film won the Grand Prix and the People’s Choice Award of Handica-Apicil 2007 festival (Festival of the short film dedicated to the rehabilitation of the disabled).
Frédéric Philibert: “When we realized that our son has problem, the pediatrician sent us to the mental health center, where we, parents, began to take psychoanalysis sessions. But we began to look for other solutions on the care of sick children in hospitals and at home, and in parallel, we decided to create a movie. It was a way to tell a little story to talk about the problem of autism in a very simple and understandable manner. This movie is for all of them: parents, professionals, those for which autism does not mean anything, and those who are faced with this life.”
