Met my new psychiatrist

She has a Spanish name and hails originally from Dominican Republic. She looks to my 51yo eyes like a 20yo, but to have an MD she must be at least in her late 20s. She is fairly new in town; her office has nothing personal on the shelves or walls. Prescribed me Remeron for sleep, but after trying it I decided I didn’t like that sedated feeling.

Meanwhile, I told my 68yo therapist about this site and how interesting and ingenious you guys all are!

My doc isn’t too phased by the internet and that isn’t surprising on the front lines.

I looked up some internet ratings of him and it was surprising the negatives but a lot were people who opted out of the program and a lot with his attitude. Always have found him top notch but I’m a terrific patient and I don’t expect anything other than my treatment I get of 10 minutes max every 6 weeks.

Hang in there and see how good they are! It’s a curiously strange world these days but those who promote the med model aren’t as bad as you like or fear!

Oh, she’s not a med pusher. I actually requested something for sleep, so the Remeron was a joint decision. She asked me to call her when I knew how it affected me. Yes, too early to tell how good she is. I’m just a little afraid that she’ll be inexperienced, etc – but that’s OK because I can fend for myself quite well.

How are ya?

Glad your proactive in your treatment. You are educated and informed about your choices your doing the right things and better than most…

Will do that, 10-4!

My therapist, the 68yo, is aware of patients who opt for not taking meds, but she knows there’s nothing they can – or should – do about that. And yeah, I’m very lucky to be informed about my own illness, addiction, etc.

Take care.

When I told my pdoc about this site he was negative saying that studies show that such communities are bad for health and the more sick members drag the healthier down

I see a fairly young psychiatrist but he is very good. You have to be pretty smart and passionate to become a doctor and especially to specialise. Takes someone special to specialise in mental health I think. I told my case manager about this site, that it is a support site and that I feel comfort in knowing there are people who are going through similar experiences to me. She seemed to think it was okay. Either way I’m still coming here.

I appreciate this forum. My pdoc has no idea how protected environment this forum is, with mods doing a great job

My therapist is older and doesn’t believe in computers much altogether. She thinks books and longhand writing are better. Actually said that computing is bad for people, makes it harder for us to appreciate a real “connection” with others.

I disagree with her because I had a wonderful online friendship that lasted six years. I loved that person. But it’s not a disagreement that will debilitate my relationship with the therapist.
