Maybe I’m just getting old but loud, booming car stereos when I am out and about are starting to annoy me. I just made a quick trip and there were several of them, even when I parked at my destination there was one parked. Maybe they could at least roll up their windows in an attempt not to bother others? But maybe I am just old and irritable today.
I used to listen to my car stereo fairly loud when I was younger as well, but I always left my windows up, and I turned it down at stoplights to not annoy other people.
I think it’s an age thing. My best friend growing up had a system in his car, and it was a blast. Nowadays, I only listen to my Pioneer floor speakers loudly in the dojo when my folks are gone. Never really listen to music loudly in the car, but I am somewhat annoyed at loud music from other cars. Usually because it’s trash modern rap
I don’t hear loud music from cars. However, when we park our boat at the sand bar, there was an annoying boat with the music turned all the way up. It was so loud the music was distorted. I wanted to tell them to turn it down. I didn’t, of course. I understand.
I remember learning about a loud chimpanzee behavior in anthropology class.
They showed us a video of chimpanzees in a noise making contest. The one who made the most noise in front of the group was considered dominant for a while after that
One chimp got a hold of some big (fuel?) cans, and jumped around booming them like a subwoofer. He was considered super dominant, of course.
I think of that video a lot when I hear these booming subwoofers. It seems to be just a basic, primitive instinct to try to express dominance. I’m not even sure they understand what they are doing.
I work at a hotel currently, though, and I’m the guy who has to call the cops when these guys get too loud. Then, I guess they learn that instinct is not modern reality.
We have laws about loud music in cars here, and especially bass. I think it started in the 1980’s that the cars started installing huge, powerful speakers that really accentuated the bass in music. I think it started in the bad side of town that teenagers and people in their twenties would turn up their bass while driving and the sound was just loud booming that vibrated right through you. You could hear it from blocks away. It became a “thing” around here. It was mostly the younger, poorer, wannabe thugs who did this. I used to hate when they did that. They finally made a law against it about 5 years ago and you don’t hear it anymore.
