Keeping Small Creatures as Pets

I’m thinking of getting either a Scorpion, Tarantula, or Praying Mantis pet in 2023.

There’s instructions online for the perfect habitat with whichever species I choose.

Also gonna use live prey (insects)

I actually want to keep multiple insects, and maybe even a Pacman Frog or a lizard.

Some people feed live mice or rodents to insects or frogs. Do you guys think it’s cruel/sadistic to do that?

Yes, that’s cruel / sadistic in my opinion.

It seems Ok in the wild where the prey can escape or fight back.

I’m only gonna feed meal worms, and other bugs to my future pet.

Also crazy to think the ancestor of humans was probably a small, rodent sized mammal.

I tried keeping a todder as a pet for a year-ish. They’re expensive, needy, and messy. Do not recommend.

No I used to feed partially stunned rats to my snake all the time.

To me a pet is something that adds value to my life. If the pet gives me no emotional enjoyment, I do not view it as a pet.

If you want a pet as a way to feel useful to another living thing, I would think helping a neighbor take care of their pet, say an elderly person that has mobility trouble, taking care of that animal giving it walks…that can give you that emotional bond, but also allow you to feel useful, without the financial burden of being its owner, might be your most valuable way to get what you want.

So are you truly interested in keeping insects because that is where your passions may be or do you just want to see live kills in a semi-controlled environment.

Pets are not a convenience but a commitment whether they love you back or not.

Just my thoughts.

Would you continue to read books if you were told you’d become a giant praying mantis? You know, like the alien species?

Just want to observe them. The feeding is interesting to watch too.

But simple animals are kinda boring to keep in a glass terrarium. They don’t do much.

I want a cat but I won’t get one as it wouldn’t be able to roam outdoors as I’m in an apartment. And cats deserve to be wild and free.
