Italy - go Backpacking or rent an Apartment?

I’m wanting to go away to Italy in April next year for 28 days. I want to go backpacking but I’m nervous as I’ll have a tight budget of about £150 a day. £4000 for the 28 days. I will be nervous about traveling around and getting lost, reading train/bus signs etc. And I think it could be too much but I love the idea.

I’ve been to Lake Como before (Northern Italy) and I love Lake Como. I had a brill 9 days there. I could rent an Apartment with Lake views for £1500 for the 28 days and have this as my base. I could travel to Milan, Venice, Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore. I think this will be more stress free.

Hopefully doing it this way will ease my anxiety around backpacking Italy. But if I rent an apartment this may be my last chance I get to backpack Italy as would need to save up again, possible take 2 years?

I’m already booked and committed to Ireland (May) and Israel (June) next year as these got transferred to next year due to Covid. I also have a Coach trip booked with my friend for October next year to Rome, Sorreento, Pompeii, thats already paid for which was meant to do this year but got moved to Next year.

Should I do my dream and go backpacking or rent a apartment?

I’m only allowed to leave the country for 28 days as need to be back for injection. My pdoc doesn’t mind me going away as long as its planned.

idk i think its more fun if you go back packing because its more of an adventure but ofcourse it will be more variable and unexpected decisions which make it a bit more dangerous especially in these times…going to random restaurants etc.

usually id say backpacking but during corona id say just get an apartment that way you dont have to interect with so many new people so randomly throughout your trip and yet you still get to experience life in that place of the world and travel around daily.

thats cool, thanks for the referal maybe ill find that useful one day

I’ve been to Lake Como in April. It’s a great time of year to go. Spring in the North of Italy might be warm enough to even swim! Personally, I would rent an apartment as it is more comfortable. But that’s just a personal preference. Enjoy your holidays!

I would backpack with a friend if possible and do the apartment thing if I were on my own. I always take the least stressful route.

If it’s your dream to backpack, I would do that. I wish I had that much to spend in Europe. I went to Paris and Berlin with a lot less. I’m sure you’ll be fine. You can always find a hostel or hotel. Or train.

I’m thinking about going to a bunch of different national parks. I’d have to get permission from my probation officer.

I went to Rome and Venice in Italy. It was nice.

If it were me, I’d rent an apartment so I didn’t have the dress of finding a place to sleep as a backpacker. Will you have a caregiver or anyone else with you?

If you go to Lake Garda, there is a beautiful BnB there that I highly recommend staying in. I do want to warn you though, that the closest public transportation only goes to the gates of the village. You have to walk inside, because of how narrow the streets are.

Edit: im not from here so I didn’t realize this. I am specifically talking about Sirmione. Apparently Lake Garda is much bigger than just that village. It’s a really cool village, though.

My care team had a MDT meeting (Multidisciplinary Team Meeting) and I’m allowed to travel alone as long as I’m not unwell. They will monitor me closer to the time.

I could perhaps do 2 weeks in a airB&B and backpack for 2 weeks, this may ease my anxiety and get used to the country.

Personally I would find backpacking too stressful. Especially if I was alone.

If it was me I would definitely book some accommodation so you have a rough plan, even if you do leave gaps.

I would prefer rent and discover from there. More likely to get a feel of the country from one spot, I think.

You can do back packing easily with 150. I used to live in Italy and once upon a time worked for a hotel/hostel there. If you stick to a budget you will be fine. Hostels , local food… fulfil your dream.

Should you need recommendations, let me know
