A close person of mine says that hospital admission just locks people up in restraints and prescribe sedatives when they are sad or depressed. Is this true in most hospitals?
No it’s not true.
I don’t know which country you are from? But most psychiatric cares don’t do that in the western world.
Have you never been a mental ward before? They only restrain you only if you’re a danger to yourself or others and you have to take your medicine to be let go.
there are different hospitals with different programs. some are better than others.
judy
I’m in Korea. She thinks they just sedate ppl all the time.
@ifeelblessed
Thank you for this advice. Happy last day of Chanukah!
Resisting and violent yes
Well, when I used to get hospitalized they would give me massive doses of medication. I don’t think they automatically do that anymore. You get put in restraints if you get violent or threatening.
Has your friend been in a psyche ward herself or is she just spreading misinformation without really knowing if it’s actually true?
I don’t know what it’s like where you are but where I am they are usually giving out meds. Restraining is just for if they are out of control.
She has never been in the psych ward. I wanted to go to the hospital because I’ve been absolutely miserable. But she says they don’t have anything at the ward and going there is a big mistake.
@Zoe Yeah that’s what I’ve figured too.
Well it’s alright too.
Where I am I had some nice company first time round.
And they do activities.
And you watch TV together with others going through similar things.
I miss it in that respect, yes.
If I don’t feel well, I take a prn.
If that doesn’t work I ask for an emergency appointment with my pdoc to adjust my meds.
Hospitalization is a final resort if all else fails, and they can’t do much except for keeping you safe.
Well, I always thought the idea was that wards are supposed to be safe places where you are away from stress and responsibility and gives you a time out from your life so you can get better. The hospitals usually have groups and classes and pool tables and ping pong tables.
I can see that. I just want to stop being miserable and failing to stay away from my command hallucinations.
Do you take an AD? Can you up that one?
I felt suicidal often when I wasn’t taking them.
Edit: I also take the max dose of Invega and some clozapine to make my voices manageable!
Yeah for sure. I am trying to up my dose so that it can help to make the voices a little bit manageable.
I upped my antidepressant as well.
I hope you feel better soon!
Sometimes it takes a while for meds to kick in.
My only reservations about the hospital is the typical antipsychotics. Other than that, most of them are okay places to be.
I have never seen that here. You have to be a threat to yourself or others to be physically or chemically restrained.
In 2004, I once confessed to a friend (who used to live in China) that I thought I was facing the onset of schizophrenia and that I might have to ask a hospital for help. She panicked and told me not go to a hospital because they treat people like animals there. Now, she might be right about hospitals in China, I don’t know, but her words stopped me from getting help much sooner. I kept trying to hide my illness, until 2008. I should have been medicated much sooner. If you can get help sooner, do so. You could always talk to someone at the hospital and ask how patients are treated.
Not the case. Hospitals do all sorts of things
