It seems like whenever someone says it, they are being a dick.
Depends on the tone of voice and context.
I say it all the time to my buddies. It, I suppose, depends on the context of it, but Iāve always used it nicely.
Iāve never heard it used in a derogatory manner, though it can be used disapprovingly. āWTF Dude?ā
Same here. Youāve got it right.
Itās only derogatory when you yell that at the cat to get off the counter. Cats donāt like being called dudes.
In no way are people being insulted by being called dudes no
Only cats
āDuuuuudeāā¦as in berating someoneā¦haha reminded me.
Just the other day, I told my cat: dude, you got issues and he spat a chicken nugget back in my face.
You can call a male human a dude and in that sense be implying that he is involved in certain masculine identity politics
Like āhes such a dudeā
Weird word, dude. It means cowboy.
It is not derogatory to me but I dont mind if someone corrected me if I used the word. I can use other words. No problem.
d000000d.
r00d.
hmphā¦
I canāt stand that slang. Itās definitely evolved and can be used in so many ways.
Personally i donāt like slangs in general. I donāt like cool speak.
What does that mean. But you sound cool.
Freelunch is taking the night off for using a racial slur.
That word is derived from a longer insulting term for black people. White folks do not get to use AAVE (African-American Vernacular English) without it being appropriaton at best, racism at worst.
Iām from Florida and we all use this word in passing conversation. Then again, itās also connected to life down here. Sometimes people can definitely say it and mean it in a rude way, but it depends on the situation.
It wasnāt back in the nineties. It was just a casual, friendly word. It wasnāt even gendered. My granddad used to call my mom and her sisters ādude.ā He called me ādudeā as well. Some people changed ādudeā to ādudetteā for females, but that was optional.
Nowadays I imagine it offends some people for being gendered? Thatās my only guess. Still seems tame.
Also I agree appropriating AAVE is lame, but thatās what a lot of Gen Z slang is unfortunately.
