Is the word "dude" derogatory?

It seems like whenever someone says it, they are being a dick.

Depends on the tone of voice and context.

I say it all the time to my buddies. It, I suppose, depends on the context of it, but I’ve always used it nicely.

I’ve never heard it used in a derogatory manner, though it can be used disapprovingly. ā€œWTF Dude?ā€

Same here. You’ve got it right.

It’s only derogatory when you yell that at the cat to get off the counter. Cats don’t like being called dudes.

Just the other day, I told my cat: dude, you got issues and he spat a chicken nugget back in my face.

You can call a male human a dude and in that sense be implying that he is involved in certain masculine identity politics

I can’t stand that slang. It’s definitely evolved and can be used in so many ways.

Personally i don’t like slangs in general. I don’t like cool speak.

What does that mean. But you sound cool.

Freelunch is taking the night off for using a racial slur.

That word is derived from a longer insulting term for black people. White folks do not get to use AAVE (African-American Vernacular English) without it being appropriaton at best, racism at worst.

I’m from Florida and we all use this word in passing conversation. Then again, it’s also connected to life down here. Sometimes people can definitely say it and mean it in a rude way, but it depends on the situation.

It wasn’t back in the nineties. It was just a casual, friendly word. It wasn’t even gendered. My granddad used to call my mom and her sisters ā€œdude.ā€ He called me ā€œdudeā€ as well. Some people changed ā€œdudeā€ to ā€œdudetteā€ for females, but that was optional.

Nowadays I imagine it offends some people for being gendered? That’s my only guess. Still seems tame.

Also I agree appropriating AAVE is lame, but that’s what a lot of Gen Z slang is unfortunately.
