Is it just me or are celebrities not the same as they used to be?

The last couple nights I have been watching as my dad flipped around late night talk shows before he goes to bed. I am realizing that none of the guests or bands are at all familiar to me.

I don’t know if it’s that I’m getting old and out of touch with entertainment, the shows just don’t have recognizable guests or what.

When I was younger I knew the vast majority of celebrities on talk shows. Is it just that there are so many entertainment outlets, from tv shows to streaming shows, to internet celebrities, that it is impossible to know most of them?

It seems that maybe there are more “celebrities” now and it is impossible to keep track of them all.

I also have been more absent from viewing entertainment media in recent years so maybe this is part of it.

What’s your opinion on this? Is there just such a vast array of celebrities these days that you just don’t know the majority of them or am I just out of touch?

I think that’s your answer @Bowens. A lot can change in a few years. I remember around 2000-2002 when I was watching a lot of TV and reading People magazine. I was 40 years old but I followed Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey’s TV show. And I watched Anna Nicole Smiths reality show. I was familiar with most of the cast of “The Real World”. I knew Ashlee Simpson and her career. I watched Comedy Central and E!. I was up to date on a lot of pop culture. For a few years I knew a lot of the celebrities including in the music world. Then I slowly fell off.

I rarely watch TV now and I have very little idea of what’s going on in music these days except for obviously big name stars like Taylor Swift, Kanye West or Arianna Grande and I’m not familiar with most of their music but at least I recognize their names. But since I don’t go to movies or watch TV I don’t know hardly any of the young popular stars. When the people in their 20’s and 30’s on here post about bands from the last 5 or 6 years I do not recognize the names. The names sound weird and mean nothing to me but apparently they’re big names. And I couldn’t name even one YouTube star.

I think the same thing that happened to me, happened to you. You just got out of touch from not keeping up with pop culture. it’s funny too, that most people on here have probably never heard of the people or shows from 2000-2002 that I listed. But they were big names back then.

My advice is to avoid the mainstream in terms of media. The bulk of it is garbage.
If a movie gets good critical reviews , maybe it’s worth watching.
As far as music goes, I’d say modern music is okay for the audience. Meaning younger people. But as far as appealing to those who are older, I suppose it depends on the person. I personally don’t listen to any recent music, but enjoy my old favorites.

I think most of the mainstream media is garbage. Who the F u c k cares about the kardashians or anyone on a shitty reality show? Before these shitty shows artists had talent. They entertained you! Now it’s just garbage.

I have internet and I get to choose my own media. I only watch the news on TV.

Hey welcome back @eighteyedspy23!

I think that most celebrities have lost their star power.

With the addition of YouTube and other internet outlets seems like everyone is famous.

Back in the day celebrities were respected and looked upon as being god like.

Today everyone is famous it seems

They lost their luster

I keep up with entertainment news because I’m very into film.

Celebrities are not what they used to be.

I think because you can become famous for literally anything these days,

As long as you’re hot.

Film stars used to be interesting artists that could hold up an interview.

Now they’re disappointingly out of touch and sometimes straight up dumb.

Not to mention some of our biggest “celebrities” got to their spotlight by leaking their own raunchy sex tapes.

I don’t get it anymore.

I really don’t.

I know I’m out of touch. I realized some years back that this type of entertainment is simply a waste of my time and I’m better off doing other things. It doesn’t bother me that I’m not up on the current celebrities. To me this means I’m doing it right.

Late night for me is 8 pm. I never see any of that stuff anymore. I don’t follow what’s hip.

Back when I was well I used to watch Letterman every night. Mostly just his monologue and went to sleep when the guests came on.

I have never followed celebrities.
