I always scored well on the standardized tests. I made a 29 on the ACT, and I didn’t prepare for it a bit. But I have real trouble learning to do practical things. I know nothing about a car. I’m barely functional on the internet. I don’t know how to do things like Skype, etc. I’m having trouble logging on to different sites. I swear I do everything right, but I can’t get on. I think someone might be blocking me. Can anyone give me the name of a good book about the internet?
Please, you are not even close to i****. As computer and Internet only emerged and gained popularity in the last one or two decades, so, many senior adults do not know how to operate a computer or surf the Internet. I barely can do anything in my real life, but I can write very well on web forums.
If you really want a book, there is For Dummies series written for the seniors. (I do not remember the book title).
There are a few websites that anyone needs to be aware of: Wikipedia.com facebook.com google.com using just those websites you can learn a lot. For learning words, I recommend wordnik.com It helps to be aware of the various threats that others pose on the internet: websites that dumb down subjects to reach a larger audience, websites that are troll havens, websites that scam people. Maybe go to a local community college or whatever and take a quick two day class on academic search methods. Knowing when to apply personal boundaries is always good. A word to the wise: youtube.com does contain extremely graphic material. Other than that: remember what you have done on the internet, and trial and error, with a bit of caution.
Sometimes the way to learn is through a narrow channel.
In my case, since I am not a computer programmer, I surfed the web to pick up ideas here and there to learn how to write my own web site. Just one page on my web site took 13,866 lines to complete. OK that was the longest of the bunch, but it was fun to learn the HyperText Markup Language( HTML ). At the same time I would pick up on other things as well. Plus I would come up with new programming ideas for my web site that are not used on any other websites.
If, however, I had picked up a book on learning how to write a program in HTML, I would probably have gotten nowhere.
My brain needs to understand something before my brain says “OK you can come on in and stay in.”. Because of this, my brain will not just accept knowledge of some kind, since that process alone does not include a full understanding of it at the same time.
I too knew nothing about cars, so whenever my car broke down, I would fix it myself an learn while in the process. Before long I was replacing my own brake pads, brake discs, repairing the power brake hydraulics, and any engine problems. ( I left the clutch to the experts ) The car, despite being listed as a “Lemon”, lasted 18 years.
But hand me a book on how to do this stuff I would have gotten nowhere because it would seem to be too complicated.
Anyhow, the best book I found about the internet, was the internet itself.
