I'm 43 and schizophrenic. According to the statistics, I'll be dead in 17 years

You’ve got a choice. You can either buy cigarettes, or get food to see you through the week. For most people it’s a no-brainer. Of course you’d buy food. But if you’re suffering from schizophrenia, living on the disability support pension and facing other psycho-social challenges, then the choice isn’t so clear.

“Some of my patients will choose cigarettes over food,” my clinical specialist nurse told me. “They also drink huge amounts of coffee. I’ve even seen people eating dried coffee from the tin.”

I’ve seen that those with mental illnesses live on average 25 years less than someone else.

I’m 57, and according to your statistics, I be dead in three years. I really do feel myself in decline both physically and mentally. Oh well, nobody lives forever.

Video - ‘Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death’ - Dr Greger.

Statistics mean as much as I frikken care about statistics.

My father smoked drinks and lived homeless for 25 years… Sz alcoholic mugged and worse and he is 67.

Times change and statistics change over time too my friends.

200 years ago many folk died much younger too
Smallpox killed thousands if not more.

Don’t smoke and yes eat right and you’ll feel better but the future isn’t promised to anyone anyway
Here is hopefully an inspiration for today…

I think that number is somewhat low because they take into consideration suicide. So please just don’t go there and I think you’ll be ok.

I feel like spamming this on all of the short life span threads now. :stuck_out_tongue:

Will any moderators be irritated by that?

It’s good I’m a voodoo child…statistics mean less than my left teste…long live @crimby
Here’s to living to 80+ For all of us.

I’m turning 50 in January, and I have never been so excited about a birthday in my life. I’m excited because I’ll be closer to the end than the beginning, finally!
While getting old and frail does worry me, I’m hoping to leave before it gets to that point. I don’t understand the desire for longevity. Tell me I only have a little while longer on this planet left to go and I feel like celebrating. I hope it’s true!

I’m almost 48. The median age of death for people with my weird heart condition is 40. Oh well. Just keep buggering on.

I like you around but I’ll respect your views… I’ve felt just that same way at points in my life… Currently I just wanna live long so I can create art that might make a difference in this crazy world

Sometimes I think that too…others I say “I hope I die by a certain age”. Never ready to die YET but sometimes I hope for a painless death at a semi young age. I’m doomed though because my family lives long.

My grandpa smoked heavily everyday and died at 96 from a perforated colon. Basically his colon was so old that it ran out of cells to replace the ones that died.

You should look up how Statistics work.

Aww, @turningthepage, you’re around my son’s age. You’re stronger than I am, like my son is too. You can make a good go of it here and make a difference. I don’t want you to want to leave like I always have. I can’t help my feelings. At this point they’re engraved on my psyche… But you can change that for yourself. You’re going to have a beautiful life!
BY the way, when are you going to Washington? My son really likes Seattle. It sounds great up that way!

I know I looked quite young for my age at 45 but then the rot set in. I think I’ve aged nearly 25 years in the last 15.
I can’t blame mine on smoking as I have never smoked. Being,to put it bluntly, quite obese hasn’t helped.

I am 68, will be 69 in 2 weeks.

I once smoked 3 packs a day and partied hard. I quit cigarettes when I was 31.

To try to make up for my youth, I try for high fiber vegan diet and take some supplements. I go to YMCA almost every day.
The worst thing for me so far was prostate cancer.

I know heavy patients who smoke and died young.
