If You Were Not Academically Inclined, Did You Play Sport Instead?

I was reasonably bright in primary school and managed to even advance a year. It was not until high school that I lost interest altogether and became a total academic failure.

During these years I participated in a lot of sport and was also quite athletic - swimming, athletics, softball, horse riding and hockey.

I don’t participate in any sport now. Did anyone keep up their school sporting activities after High School/College?
What sports did you play?

I was more academically inclined than I was sporty. I was the young child/teenager that tended to get picked last for a team. I’ve not done anything much sporty since leaving school than going swimming. I’m a slow but steady swimmer. I haven’t been swimming for quite a few years though.

I was balanced but definitely more athletically inclined but then I slipped academically before having hernia surgery I got cut from baseball I was overweight. Baseball was my favorite sport to play. And maybe my best. I was pretty good but not really great at every sport I ever played. Although I was always confident at baseball I was always underrated

I was always way more interested in sports than school. I played basketball and football in high school, and could’ve played both in college at division 3 schools, I chose not to because we couldn’t afford the tuition at these schools. they were not offering athletic scholarship, but acceptance into the university.

after I dropped out of state college, I continued to play basketball, in church leagues, and rec leagues, and in my backyard.

then I stopped playing basketball for a few years because I didn’t want to injure myself. but just recently I signed up to play in another rec league as im hoping to lose some belly fat. also I lift weights 6 days a week.

I wasn’t academically inclined until college. I did in highschool however hold multiple jobs and played in orchestra. Orchestra was my “team sport”

I was good at every sport I tried growing up. baseball, soccer, basketball, football. but I suck at golf. that one never came to me. shot under 100, one time in my life.

Oh yeah same. Golf was hard. It’s more of an art than a sport I think haha. Developing your swing with patience and virtue and discipline and concentration. One sport I was amazing at the few times I did it was archery. And skiing I was a natural at but only did it once. Everything I tried I was good at. But I was never ever the star because of my size at the sports i liked…except for a few years of pick up football I was a star no one could tackle me and I tackled well. Everyone was still the same size as me and I was great. Soccer I won team mvp then quit. But we sucked. I hated losing. I became good at basketball after high school but not during or before. And baseball was up and down but mostly up till I got cut. My stories haha. I wasn’t too good at tennis either.

I used to hate it when they used that method to choose a team. It was so cruel. My favourite teacher just used to pat everyone on the head numbering each one of us a one or a two. A much fairer method causing the least anxiety for people.

@lifer. That is excellent that you have signed up for rec league. I knew you were heavily into your weight training. Wish I had the motivation.

This is something always been true for me lol and it’s carried into adulthood. Habit of watching sports over reading a book at night lol.

An interesting article from 2007 , that was certainly the case with me at school.

The grass is always greener because I always thought my sports attention was a waste since I wasn’t going pro or anything ever. Maybe it’s not but it’s good to have a balance which I never had. now I’m the opposite in adulthood. More academic but I still reminisce to my sports days. I miss playing some sports. And I still love watching. You’re good firemonkey

I have similar thoughts. so much time and energy spent on something that didn’t help with my adult life, other than keeping me fit. my brothers and sisters were better students than me and all got their college degrees.

I think if I did go back to college it would be for something sports related, like nutrition, or physical therapy. something to do with health and the body would be what I’m good at, I think.

if I had gone to college to play basketball. I would now be a middle school or high school basketball coach and a teacher of some kind. I think I would prefer middle school, because I like kids that age and can teach them the game and fundamentals. but high school would pay better. sometimes I think im too short to be a high school coach, just don’t have the natural authority, another reason why I would prefer middle school ball.
