I was right. My mom is now denying

That she did that much damage. She bent 3 rims it turns out. She said she only damaged 1 tire, but the car was fine before she drove it. We fully checked it before loaning it to her for her safety. It’s $559.70 for the repair. Ugh. What a mess!

Is the repair coming out of your pocket?

I’m sorry, you’re between a rock and a hard place.

Not sure yet. Right now she’s too mad to talk about it. If it’s out of my pocket, it’ll be sitting in my driveway for a long while

Can you drive with the damage or will the police pull you over?

I can’t drive it. It’s too unsafe. It hobbles along. It’ll just cause more damage

Oh, no. So sorry about your car. :frowning: I hope she comes to her senses and pays for the damage.

Thanks @anon70814080

Rule of thumb: Never lend a senior your vehicle as there’s usually a reason they’re not using theirs and it’s never a good one. I hope I’ll have the sense to stop driving when I reach the point where I shouldn’t be. I’m already good about leaving the car parked on days when my positives are too distracting to be behind the wheel.

Yes, I know my post is ageist, but we all decline as we age and sometimes a person just needs to step back from certain things when we become a risk to others.

I agree @shutterbug . You’re absolutely right

My mom gave me the money but is very angry and doesn’t want to talk. She thinks I’m taking advantage of her. I won’t be loaning my car again. This breaks my heart. I hope it blows over quickly but my mom will probably hold it against me for a really long time

I’m glad you won’t be lending her your car again. Do you know what she wanted your car for? Was it just grocery shopping? Maybe there’s a Meals on Wheels program, and other programs, in your area that can help her live independently for as long as possible? Aging is a tough thing. I injured a hip two months ago. It took five weeks for it to heal, and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get groceries.

She bounced a car over a curb hard enough to only damage one tire and not the other two?

Pull the other finger.

@anon70814080 , she’s visiting from Florida and had lots of people to see here. She used to live here. She didn’t want to rent a car or pay Uber. But either I drive her or she gets a ride some other way from now on. I want to have my mom in my life after she wasn’t in my life for so long.

My dad drove into a creek and lost his license and my sister helped him get it back. I filed a petition with the dmv for him to lose his license. Scariest thing I ever did standing up to my dad. I am glad you are not loaning your car again to your mom

Wow @Sunlit . I hope I never have to take it that far.

I quit driving and sold my car as soon as I noticed I wasn’t as sure a driver as I used to be. It was a good decision and I’m getting help from others. I used to help people with my car and now its my turn.

That’s very wise @PinCushion

Another thing is also true. I don’t bounce back from car accident injuries like a young person. I was rear ended 5 or 6 years ago and I still get stiff about it. I’m definitely a homebody, now.

My dad had dementia and shouldn’t be driving.

@Sunlit - no judgment or negative thoughts here. I just feel bad it got to that for you
