I think my cat has joined a gang!

I went outside to smoke and I noticed a field cat looking at my neighbor’s bush. Last time that happened it had Kitty Kins pinned in there and I had to scare it off so she could come home. So, I went to scare it off and it wasn’t just him, it was four other field cats too! And sure enough Kitty Kins also came out of the bush.

I had to coax her inside with the laser but finally got her in, checked her over and she was fine. And she wasn’t upset either. I thought she isn’t acting like 5 field cats had her pinned in a bush.

Fast forward about an hour and I went back outside and she wanted to go with. Well that same group of field cats goes rabble rousing down the center of the street, meowing, and I’ll be damned if Kitty Kins doesn’t run out and start following behind them. She’s went with them. It seems as though Kitty Kins is in a gang!

My cat Banksy was in a feral cat gang.

He came home less and less after he found the gang,

Eventually left us for them.

We figured it was what he wanted.

I don’t let my cat out except for the catio or on a long lead in the yard when I’m out with her.

My cat is an indoor cat only
Is this cruel?

I’m wondering if I should at least try to take her out in our backyard on a long lead.

I’m so glad your cat has found companions. I know what it is to need friends!

Mine would have been pancaked by traffic years back if we had let her out. She doesn’t exactly pay attention to her surroundings. Our previous three places we lived at while we had her all had busy roads immediately next to our yard.

No. Letting them run outside without a catio or lead is the bad choice. They wreak havoc on local small wildlife, can get hit by a car, pick up disease, or be eaten by dog or coyote.

Unfortunately, sometimes it’s super hard to keep them in. I personally have 3 that insist on being out. They’ll shoot out the door and take off.

Yeah it seems that my cat has no interest in going outside.

Whenever when I carefully open the door she doesn’t get near it.

I open the door when I’m leaving not to entice her to go out

That isn’t how it is here at all. Some people have “inside cats” but most people allow their cats out for at least some of the day. You can even buy GPS units to see where they’re going.

Forcing an animal to not go outside seems cruel to me.

There was the cat killer in London. It turned out ot be a killer fox specialising in cats. He’d leave the heads. Most foxes leave cats alone.

Coyotes are a big thing in USA and snap up loads of cats. It is completely different there.

Yeah that’s true. I didn’t think of that.

I won’t get a cat at my place as it is unable to go outside. I think it is cruel to keep them trapped inside all the time in our climate.

You do get ragdoll cats that are happy to stay inside though.

My cat is content staying inside.
I’ll open the doors with screens on when the weather is nice.

We’re on the edge of town next to a large nature area. Not uncommon to find deer, rabbit, and coyote scat in our yard in the mornings. It’s something else when the buggers howl in your back yard.

That’s why I built the catio and I take her out every day or two when the weather co-operates.

My cat is very petite and fragile, she only weighs 7 pounds.
She wouldn’t last a day outside on her own.

She’d be easy prey for predatory animals like hawks.

I also think that it’s cute that your cat Kitty Kins has met a bunch of new cat friends! @Leaf

So good to know I’ll be able to find the corpse more easily after one of the pickup truck driving local redneck yahoos deliberately runs over my little lady. Because they do that a lot here.

I was specifically talking about what people do in the UK. Not sure why you’re making it into an issue.
