Just because meds help people, does not mean they can not do well off meds. If you are stable you should know if you were misdiagnosed or not.

Not sure, it could be that the meds have helped put you into remission or recovery.

all I know is psychotic epiodes are mind breaking, my last one was 9 years ago

That’s a long time to be stable, your pdoc would be the best person to talk to about it.

Talk it over with your doctor. IF you’ve already gone this long without an episode off meds, I feel like you could make a stronger case, if you are symptom free. If you still have positive or negative symptoms and you’re just “managing” without having a psychotic break, that sounds more like luck to me. I really just want you to be safe. I don’t have any real answers for you.

Are there any case studies about schizophrenics that get off of medication that are positive? Every thing I’ve read suggests the opposite!

I don’t know…I have a schizophrenia diagnosis but I have never been on meds. I see a psychiatrist & a therapist regularly. It’s part of a special clinic here where I live. I also know that there are many people in the same clinic with the same diagnosis who aren’t as high-functioning as I am who also opt out of medication.

I think the attitude towards “psychotic spectrum disorders” is changing considerably. Perhaps if they opened up the terminology a bit I would not be labelled “schizophrenic” but as it stands, that’s what I’ve got. I’m sure the people who have successfully gone off medication it might be a similar scenario.

No a small percentage of schizophrenics do fine without medication and never ever relapse, maby you should ask your doctors instead to lower your dose since your stable.
