I rescued a baby... mouse? Mole?

It was about to be ran over. Currently is wrapped up in a shirt in one of my spare cages.

Thats a mole, doesnt look like a mouse.

Not sure what it is but it looks too big and hairy to be a garden variety mouse. I could be wrong though. Good save Moon!

Are you going to keep him/her for a pet or set him/her free somewhere safer?

What does its tail look like? Could be a baby groundhog.

Squanchy is right, it looks more like a groundhog.

Oooooh, it could also be a baby muskrat. It looks a lot like one. They’re usually pretty chill, but I remember one time when I was a wee lad I was chased by a rabid muskrat. The mail person saw me running past her, and then saw the crazy muskrat charging for us and she booked it too.

@Moon Do you have a wildlife rescue organization in your area that takes in orphaned or injured wildlife?

It could be a vole

It’s tail is pretty short but not a stump. I’m not touching kt or getting close again because it has lice and I don’t want it to spread so it’s in a cage in a separated room.

I contacted a wildlife rehabilitator and they said to call in the morning.

Pictures of a Vole on the internet look suspiciously like your specimen @Moon . That may be what you have there.

This person wrote a pretty good poem about voles, also pretty humorous.

I wish I could keep him :sob:

I honestly don’t see why you can’t…people keep pet mice. As long as you learn his needs and what to feed him I see no reason why you couldn’t. And finding that out should be as easy as an internet search away.

I don’t have the funds to treat his lice problem  he needs kitten revolution probably and that’s like $40 which isn’t expensive just don’t have it right now. Plus he’s a baby so he needs special care

Oh, ok Moon. You do what you think is best.

probably best to get rid of it. they can carry diseases and are aggressive in captivity, also they only live for a year, also if its young enough that it still drinks milk, cows milk wont work. my friend found a stray kitten and fed it cows milk and it ended up dying eventually
