I was sitting on a bench and a guy approached me if he could sit next to me. He said he had been in the Spanish Legion and was schizophrenic. He said he had no place to stay and needed money for food and to pay for a hostel.
I gave 20€. Then he asked me if I had a boyfriend and if I was living in the area. It felt too much and then I said ‘es bien’. And I walked away.
Good that you realized something fishy, I could have just carried on with the conversation, with out even noticing the intent of the conversation.
wow wow I too had a conversation in my native, he was selling lottery ticket and we actually had a good conversation, we connected instantly, by his story I knew he had some kind of mental illness, but was not evident he did look manic and by the way he was speaking only the actual truth.
some time i feel the people who speak the truth are always considered different
I remember, before diagnosis, I used to see a person right by where I lived in New York. He was also homeless and schizophrenic. He used to say that he was working on some method to break the lottery, claiming to be a computer scientist. I guess I never knew I could have the same disorder as him in the future. In a sense I was going through delusions at that time, too, but I was going to College, I had friends, I used to hang out a lot with them, etc…I was quite normal before I went totally berserk.
It seems more like he just wanted to get money out of you and take advantage. Did he display sz symptoms or you just took his words at face value?
Theres a guy that walks up and down the street near my place. He talks to someone (voices) constantly. Like motor mouth rapid talking and anyone he sees he starts trying to talk to you while talking to a voice. I usually avoid him lol.
Not everyone who has sz displays symptoms. Most people don’t brag about having schizophrenia so it did seem credible. He also smoked which is standard for schizophrenics.
Well given the state of their welfare system, its possible it was authentic. Remember, the Spanish can be very “innocent” and culturally relaxed so are not like us. They are less reserved. However, as with most cities, lots of crime and social issues.
Go to the Valley of the Fallen while you still can. Walk it if poss.
