I go outside, not looking for trouble, but just wanting to know if it is real, and there is no one out there. I’m thinking that maybe the people talking about me are downstairs. Sound carries in weird ways in this building. I’ve experienced this a lot, not recently, but years ago.

You might be hearing real sounds but are interpreting it as if you are being talked about which is paranoia.

You’re right. There have been times when I was sure people were coming after me, and they stopped at the room next door. But there was this time at school when I thought people were talking about me, not because I was looking for trouble. I was just doing a little reality testing. But one time I stood in my doorway after I thought people were talking about me, and this guy came down and knocked on the door of my neighbor across the hall, and he threw a board at the door and yelled inside his room, “Goddmamit, you crazy ■■■■■■■■■■■■! Get the ■■■■ away from me!”
