I just got a 5 day eviction notice from my landlord

Well I just got my eviction notice from my landlord because I’m 5 days late on rent. Just went in today and paid what I could afford ($800 out of $1030) and got a promise to pay on the 16th. They’re charging me $495 on the 16th to fully pay the remaining $230 on my rent! That’s nearly $300 in late fees :expressionless: I hate being broke

I was evicted similarly years ago. Ironically, it helped lead to me getting on disability benefits. They were monitoring my money/account and waited until I ran out of money before beginning the disability income. I think that’s the way they’re supposed to do it. They wait until you need the money. I’m a little surprised that when I mention this, others seem perplexed and don’t believe me. Well, it’s true. Disability benefits are supposed to be things a person needs … not just wants.

But I don’t know your particular situation. Sounds like you don’t get disability income yet? I hope you’ve already applied and are waiting for approval for the income to kick in, like what happened to me.

I didn’t want to move. So I just stayed. But then days later, the landlord got maintenance to open the locked door with a forceful power tool and then a Constable/Sheriff came in with a gun pointed toward my head. That wasn’t cool. But when he realized I wasn’t a threat, things calmed down fast. Why did the landlord do it that way? Don’t they have a “master key”? I guess he wanted a dramatic effect. What a dill-knocker.

So my advice would be to not do it like I did, years ago. Heh. Landlord might be a jerk and forcefully remove you. If the landlord was smart, he/she would ask about your income situation and wait until the disability income kicks in. Then, the landlord would get paid for a long time. But, when it comes to money, some people get their minds clouded and don’t realize how some things work in this crazy life. Some people are just greedy and don’t care about others. Well, jokes on them because I’ve lived at my current apartment 10+ years consecutive. Should’ve been patient. But I don’t know if your situation is precisely like mine.

Fair warning, also. If you get evicted, they may try to send you a collection letter months later. Disregard it. If the letter tries to collect backrent via a collection agency, it’s a complete scam. Don’t pay it. I asked about that online on this site and their advice was absolutely correct.

Did you ask them how they justify charging you that much for a late fee?!

Do you have anywhere you can go?

“Oh you don’t have enough money to pay rent on time, we’re gonna have to take more money then”
What a scam. How exactly have you incurred hundreds of dollars worth of damage? ■■■■ landlords.

What sucks even worse is now that only gives me two weeks to come up with January’s rent.

That kind of thing can be so galling. Try not to get to upset. You can always sound off on this site if you need to.

Maybe see if Catholic Charities can help you.

Your landlord sounds like a real scumbag. That amount of late fees doesn’t sound right.

Yeah, there may be ways to get “rental assistance.” I tried that route but was turned down.
