Thats a tough situation, maybe you could have explained to the Black lady that you were just doing your job, and that required telling people there was self checkout. It might have defused the situation?

In customer service, they like to tell front line employees things like “Don’t blame the company. To the customer, you are the company.” They basically pay people to get chewed out when, sometimes, maybe the CEO might deserve such a talking-to instead.

That may be true, but if i was in a difficult situation like that, i think i would have just told the customer that its store policy to mention the self checkout.

I know this topic is closed, but I wanted to mention one quick thing on this. When I was psychotic, i had taken up a name for religious reasons. Religion was part of my delusions. I actually would’ve changed it legally if I wasn’t broke at the time. I had gotten the paperwork and everything.
The name was Muhammad Abinidab.
Anyway, I was selling off most of my stuff to give to charity and I had this transaction on Ebay where this guy asked about what I was selling. The guy totally ended up threatening to call the FBI on me because of my name. He also stated how he was soon going to be in my area and might pay me a visit, among other things. So, believe it or not, I have experienced some rare views into Arabic/Muslim persecution myself.
Edit: I even still have the paperwork squirreled away for name change.
