I have major cognitive difficulties

So horrible I mostly choose not to speak because I’m a blathering idiot.
Anyway why is it i can’t read one page of a book but I can do crossword puzzles. I don’t understand why.

Yes, a lot of people have that same problem! Reading requires more concentration, understanding, memory and vocabulary! Did you always have cognitive issues or was it after the schizophrenia started?

Start small. Little bit of exercise to get moving. Eat smarter. Try and read a little bit at first. I started reading Harry Potter. I’d seen the movies and it was easier to understand.

I’m a paranoid schizophrenic. I do well and live large but honestly I work pretty gawdamn hard to get a bit of function. I’ve been in similar states and I’ve just worked my ways out of it.

Don’t bury yourself in a hole. Make some positive changes to improve. We all can do it! I’m still doing it every single day of my life!

I’m a major Potter head! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: my mother collects Harry Potter memorabilia and we have a whole room in the house dedicated to just Harry Potter collectibles! My whole family goes every other year to Disney World and Universal Studios because they have a huge Harry Potter Wizarding World theme park section in both Universal Parks! It’s amazing!

Yeah, i’ve noticed in myself since i was diagnosed with schizophrenia that i have some cognitive issues myself. It is very frustrating. I used to be able to do sudoku puzzles easily. Now i struggle enormously. Like you, i struggle with some things, and do okay at others. It is quite depressing really.

The vast majority of people capable of posting here don’t have an intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning.

Some may well have areas of cognitive difficulty that point to them having a learning difficulty(UK)/learning disability(USA). With schizophrenia performance IQ is more likely to be lower than verbal IQ than vice versa.
Another cognitive issue for some of us is executive functioning.

Getting help early on for any cognitive issues is important. I think we are living in an age where such issues are taken more seriously. That was not the case when I was at school from 1961-1975. Nowadays it’s accepted that some people can be ‘Gifted but learning disabled’(USA) or ‘Twice exceptional’.

Having cognitive difficulties is not necessarily a sign of low overall intelligence.

After it started

I don’t know if I believe what you’re saying entirely. I think again that your getting to caught up in worrying about what people think of you that you do an over kill trying to show you’re intelligent. The majority of things you post a lot of people here can’t follow. They are just humble human beings trying to make it through the day. Especially on this particular thread where someone is upset about her cognitive skills, I think it could do more harm then good stressing people out making them feel inferior. I just don’t agree with making a statement to people that if they are able to post here they don’t have a learning disability. That’s irresponsible.

I wish I could help you. Did the doctors ever do any before and after brain scans on you to look for how fast things were changing or if they were medication based as opposed to schizophrenia based? I’m not even sure if doctors do that, but sometimes brain scans are done to rule out any other underlying issues?

@FatMama Try a choline supplement such as fish oil, CDP Choline or Alpha GPC. Its helped me out tremendously.

This was my same problem months ago. So I started with short poems, then articles, then graduated to my books again. I’m reading chapter books again. It took a little effort, but the brain can be rehabilitated. Cognition can be restored. Just like a wound or broken bones. It takes a while to mend.

Yes, retraining on the brain. Sometimes what’s lost is not always gone. It’s like starting over again with a small advantage that it’s already there somewhere in your brain, and you’re just trying to re access that information. It’s playing hide and go seek on you!

I had brain scan a long time ago which basically showed I have a brain lol. He says it’s not med related but that sza causes brain damage

Yes very much 15

That’s not what I said ,or would ever say, as a person who very probably has what in the USA is called a learning disability. I said the vast majority of people here would not have an intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning.

My post fully acknowledged that people here could have a learning disability(USA)/learning difficulty(UK). In no way was I making light of @FatMama 's situation.

In no way could it be construed that I was trying to make anyone feel inferior. In fact I was being supportive.

FatMama deserves all the help she can get for her cognitive issues , as does anyone else who has such difficulties.

My cognitive problems comes in cycles. For a month or so I forget everything. Can’t recall words. Then for a week or so I am really good at stuff. It’s frustrating.
