I have a mental status exam tomorrow

It’s to get my SSI back. I cut it off about 6 or 7 years ago when i was delusional about the government. I’m really nervous and i don’t wanna do it. I don’t like the idea of someone taking notes on me and sending them to my GP and the government.

Just be honest about your thoughts, experiences, and moods. If you need the money, let that be your motivator. I totally get not wanting the government in your business but if it’s the only way for you to have an income, then it’s what you’ve got to do

It’s really hard. I know i’m gonna come across as extremely anxious person cause i always do. I can’t talk to people. One of the reasons i need ssi back. But i worry i’m gonna get so anxious and paranoid i’m gonna walk out. I will feel like i wanna stand in a corner and hide and it’s very hard to talk. I’m so used to my symptoms now idk even what to say. I hate being psyched.

I feel like im stuck cause the reason i lost ssi was because of my symptoms which is the same reason i cant work. I come across as almost a scared rabid animal or something when i have to be trapped in a room with doctors. And i havent been in a room communicating with a psych since 2011. My last psychiatrist was virtual appointments.

This is important for them to know, so it’s ok that they see that.

Im a little afraid that i come across as so extremely anxious they will think im putting it on to get ssi. Like i will feel more comfortable for the appt if i wear a jacket with a hood but im afraid they will judge me negatively for that.

At this point if i get approved they will give me like $8000 dollars back pay. Maybe i need to do some online window shopping to try to motivate myself to go. A couple hours in a room with a doctor is almost not worth 8k to me haha

If the hooded top helps you, then wear it. All they care about is that you’re clothed. Not everyone can be choosy about what clothes they can have if they’re not working and relying on donations

Good luck!

Can you take someone along to help keep your anxiety in check? Sometimes that helps with anxiety.

No. The appt instructions say “come alone”.

Here they allow to take someone along as long as they don’t interfere with the examination.

I’m in Belgium though.

I hope everything goes alright for you! Just try to remember that the people you’re seeing aren’t here to hurt you, only to help assess your need for disability. If you’re anxious, that’s okay and perfectly normal. Just be true to yourself about your issues, symptoms, etc. and try not to think about it like you’re being monitored like a lab rat by them. You’re safe.
