I don't like my psychologist autism question

I saw a psychiatrist for 30 mins (a new one) he was trying to dx avoidant personality disorder and I said my psychologist was testing to see if I have autism and he wanted to send me for autism assessment…

My psychologist when I told her said she’s gonna stop him from sending me to get that diagnosis of autism as she thinks that won’t help me…

Why? I’m annoyed. My partner says she probably trying to help as a dx could mean they can’t help.

You’ll be taking different meds? I don’t think there is meds for autism and personality disorders.

I’ve heard from people with autism in the UK that adult services for autism are pretty bleak. That said, they seem to have helped @firemonkey

You don’t seem autistic to me… but I’m not an expert.

There’s not much they can do for an adult diagnosed with Autism.
There are no specific meds to treat Autism.

The pdoc said if i get tested for autism then I probably don’t even meds … so he was gonna send me to get a dx

And what meds will he prescribe for personality disorders?

The help I’m getting was in place before the Asperger’s dx. It was arranged by my stepdaughter. That included being listed as a vulnerable person according to the care act 2014. That would normally involve having a review every year.

What I did get after my Asperger’s dx was a post diagnosis appointment at which risks etc were discussed and a post diagnosis information pack given.

I was assessed within 4 months at 32. The waiting list if you get sent by primary care is over two years.

The assessor was supposed to be on my call to the psychiatrist, but he didn’t bother

They told me to buy a self help book, which is now in the bin

My psychologist referred me to a local charity for autism/adults, and their waiting list was so long they didn’t offer to put me on it

Basically the mental health services in the UK (At least where I am) are only commissioned to provide diagnostics and no post support.

The diagnosis to me is essentially useless

So basically she may be preventing him from proceeding to get me assessed… because a dx could mean they can’t help me?

The diagnosis might be helpful to you if you want that kind of self discovery and explanations for things, but that’s about it

That’s very similar to my situation., and many others with a late onset dx.

I will stick with social anxiety and work through it but I really don’t want to go back and face the old job… I just cried to her on zoom like a child its just embarrassing

Might consider going private if they agree not to disclose to gp but not sure if it worth it

It’s so frustrating. My mental health team unfortunately caught the brunt of my frustrations about this, as I don’t personally think it’s acceptable to diagnose and not treat (In a sense - I accept nothing will cure it)

My psychologist said to me before that a diagnosis would help her treat me. Then the other day she says her techniques won’t work on someone with autism, and now I am discharged from Psychology
