How typical is it for a schizophrenic to be here?

so I was wondering, because I feel a bit at odds with the forum at times. how likely do you think it is that a schizophrenic would spend all day on a schizophrenia forum?

are we a representative sample of schizophrenia? or are we outliers, more interested in being here with our diagnoses than being out living our lives?

I think the goal might eventually be not needing the forum anymore. It helps you talk to people who go through what you go through. Not that people can’t and shouldn’t’ stay on here indefinitely. But for many it is a stepping stone on the way to feeling better.

We are a subset of medium-high functioning patients (mostly paranoid sz or sza), most are young, western and with a decent knowledge of technology.

I’ll probably stay here forever. Y’all are ■■■■■■■ stuck with me :smiling_imp::kissing_heart:

Meh that doesn’t sound so awful either. I like the people on here. I just had a picture of me ninety years old, sitting at my Mac and typing on this forum.

I am an outlier in this forum.
My schizophrenia is very severe.
I opt not to take medications, and I try to lead an optimal lifestyle health wise.
I exercise every day and often more than once a day.
I try to squeeze the lemon, both in terms of physical fitness(including aerobic fitness and muscle strength),
and mental fitness( studying).
I feel young and energetic.
I hope to live forever and stay young forever.
I have to say that I have a very good base(disease free) level of intelligence, and if trained also a good level of physical fitness, and I was brought up so that I learned English.
Were it not for these factors, I would not be able to participate here.

its funny. when I was out in the world I was considered schizophrenic. but now that I’m here my therapist and doctor say I’m “in remission”.

I think it helps people not be as , hmmm how to say it?

We can be more able to know what is average for us and what is not. And what is a bad sign and what is not.

We know from reading here, how to better recognize that something is a symptom, or new to us symptom.

Here, in regular conversation, if something slips out about our MI the world doesnt have to end.

I don’t think that it’s typical for most Schizophrenics to be here.
Most of them don’t like to socialize, not even online.

I come here every day.

But most szcs in my country dont ever go out and socialize. I mean support groups. That supprized me. I dont know why they dont go out. They hide in the walls of their homes.

Im beginning to think there are such things as intovert and extravert szphrenic.

I visit this site for the news stories, kind of like Playboy. I like hearing about the lives/stories of other schizophrenics too. I learn something new everyday.

Absolutely not. Have you met any others with schizophrenia?

not really. before I was diagnosed I thought a schizophrenic was a psychopath. so I thought they were labeling me a psychopath is how I took it. state vs me kind of thing. then I started hearing voices.

I don’t go to groups, this is pretty much it for my exposure to other schizophrenics.

so what are schizophrenics like? withdrawn, delusional, incoherent?

I trying to live life
Life is harsh
Sometime i feel this forum is not for me
Sometime i feel very ill i get strong relief when i come here

Not always. But definitely more often than you see here. At least in my experience. And those who aren’t still don’t function as well as most people here do. People with sz have, on average, an IQ of about 90. That’s a pretty low average, and that’s another thing I don’t think you see here. And people here are seldom homeless or institutionalized.

We’re definitely a higher functioning group than most people with sz.

interesting. yeah I’m not sure what my iq is. I got a 1080 on my sat 15 years ago, scoring higher in language than math. i understand the scoring has changed somehow since then. what do iq tests, test?

so do you work? how do you function/ support yourself?

They test different aspects of intelligence that lend themselves well to testing. Verbal intelligence, visuospatial intelligence, processing speed, etc. It varies a little from test to test, but it’s roughly the same.

I don’t work. I’m a full-time student working on my doctorate degree. After this, I will work. Until then I will be living on student loans, savings and money that I get from my parents.
