How to tell the difference between depression and negative symptoms?

I read somewhere that if you are distressed by the way your life is, its depression. If you are complacent, then its negatives. For those that suffer from both, how do you tell the difference?

It’s very difficult to tell the difference for me

Even after all these years

Depression gives itself away by the dark thoughts it brings along. It makes you feel desperate, defeated, unworthy, lets you believe there’s no exit, no future, nothing.

Negative symptoms make you powerless, physically, but at least they don’t mess with your thoughts and moods.

That’s my experience.

Yeah that sounds bang on to me. Depression creates feelings of hopelessness and defeat, whilst negative symptoms take away your ability and emotions. I think that they both affect each other, with negative symptoms increasing feelings of depression

Thanks for that man… I have a hard time separating the two. If your way of seeing it is right I have very mild negatives and depression that stems from my life situation.

I really rarely feel deep depression…

I would agree with you Wave.

WIth over 30 years of having schizophrenia I too cannot tell the difference

between negative symptoms and depression. Having said that I do take an

antidepressant.
