Risperdal reduced my impulsivity but I still have some impulsivity. How to reduce impulsivity? I think cognitive symptoms increase impulsivity.
I read that impulsivity is common in schizophrenia in acute and in chronic phases. It can also lead to aggression and violence like in my case but this happens rarely on meds.
“Aggressive behavior and impulsivity are often found in paranoid schizophrenia and can occur during both acute and chronic phases of the illness. Impulsivity is defined as action without planning or reflection, and it seems to be related to a failure of behavioral filtering outside of consciousness.”
I just read on Wikipedia that antidepressants and antipsychotics are used to treat impulsivity. I fear that ADs can cause psychosis and I don’t have a psychiatrist now
I wouldn’t say that being impulsive necessarily is a character defect. If that’s how you have always been I wouldn’t try do dull it away with meds. Maybe just try to be aware that you need to think when you are about to do something that could lead to negativity or trouble.
Practice meditation. Develop a habit to think before doing any action. Impulsivity is when reacting to every impulse. When get some impulse or urge take a moment to think about its consequences before acting on it.
The reason why impulsivity occur is because of lack of thinking. Sz can make it hard to think quickly but possible to think by taking time. Because of hard to think a quick way is to act without much thought this is when problem starts. So take enough time to think but only act after thinking process is over. This way delay the responses.
When I go through impulsivity I meditate. I also avoid things that stimulate me to have a good mood or bad mood, either extreme makes me overspend or act agressive
