How to lower cholesterol if I have a normal diet?

I usually eat fast food like burger and pizza once a day.
Mother makes home food twice a week
I eat no vegetables

I went to get blood work done
Receptionist tells me to eat more flax seeds,oatmeal,omega-3s etc.

Should I start eating those cholesterol lowering foods every morning?

No odor garlic tablets helped my ex drop his cholesterol 100 points. It may help you, but ask your doc because garlic is a blood thinner, too.

You mean garlic tablets?

Yea garlic and flax seed lowers cholesterol, exercise is also very good to lower cholesterol.
Avoid eggs, fried food, food with high saturated and trans fat.

Fast food once a day is actually quite a lot. I also had high cholesterol when eating fast food just once a day every day. The only way I lowered mine was through reducing my fast food intake. You really should not have it more than once a week. That stuff is really, really bad for your body.

Eggs have a high cholesterol content but it was my understanding that it was good cholesterol. There is good cholesterol (HDL) and bad cholesterol (LDL). Having high HDL actually has a lot of health benefits.

I have to take statins.

My doctor said it was so high diet would not sort it out

I developped high cholesterol from eating too much eggs. My psychiatrist told me to limit eating eggs to 2 per week. I was eating 4 nearly everyday.

Oh yes if you are eating a ton of them like that. However when eaten in moderation they can be a good source of many nutrients.

From what I see online there seems to be a lot of debate on whether or not eggs can be bad. Im seeing a lot of articles saying they are fine and some saying they should be limited.

What I learned in school was that they are a good source of protein and good cholesterol. But a lot of times school info conflicts with real life!

I studied cholesterol, triglycerides, lipoproteins and hdl/ldl in university. I forgot most of it :slightly_frowning_face:
What I remember is that hdl/ldl are not in food but food can affect them. Soluble fiber for example lowers ldl etc Cholesterol in food gets converted to ldl or hdl in the body by lipoproteins (?). Trans and saturated are worse than cholesterol, they raise cholesterol, blood pressure and atherosclerosis which increases heart attack and stroke risk.

I wish I could control my diet. I am eating less eggs but still eat too much from other foods.

Yeah thats the complicated explanation. New research is finding that you don’t actually get much cholesterol from food sources your liver makes it from trans fats and the like. It is still present in food it just doesn’t contribute a lot to your overall level or something like that? Its confusing.

I am struggling a lot with controlling my diet as well. Fast food addiction is really really hard to overcome so I feel you. You have to treat it like any other addiction really.

My dad many years ago started to eat oatmeal sprinkled with ground flax every morning and in a short while he was taken off cholesterol meds. He still does oatmeal every morning and is still not on cholesterol meds.

Yea both oatmeal and flax have soluble fibers which decreases bad cholesterol, LDL.

I have super high cholesterol and we can’t figure out why, except possibly genetic. I rarely eat fast food and the meat I eat most is chicken. A lot of salads.

I can’t take statins, they cause me to feel pain all over like I’ve been hit by something. The closest I ever felt to that is after a car wreck that threw me through a windshield . Some people have that side effect.

Start exercising. It’s good for a whole bunch of things, including high cholesterol.

I was vegan for 2 years, when I did a blood test, I got very low cholesterol levels.

I drink beetroot and celery protein shake, eat oatmeal for breakfast. At one point I was super healthy.
It’s possible with diet.

I take a statin everyday because of high cholesterol.
My diet is not so bad but it could be better.

OR, start taking medication that lowers cholesterol and start eating healthier to keep it low.

Thanks everyone.

I can’t wait to start my diet.

Soon.

I would start off with taking her advise and eating oatmeal in the mornings instead of eggs. Exercise does numbers too
