How many europeans here hope turkey joins the EU eventually? I’ve been hearing a lot of anti-turkey sentiment in the western media recently and was curious if that reflects the views of the average citizen in the eu?
I’m not European but I hope they don’t. A big reason Europe wouldn’t let them join was due to their human rights issues. I just finished reading about how Turkey implemented all these committees that sound good, but in reality do nothing to stop the crimes that happen in their country. Sex trafficking there is a huge issue for example…and they’ve been consistently underreporting the number to make it sound like they’re doing something so they can get EU’s resources…
I think they need to clean up their act first.

Nope. Bad sex trafficking problem. They bring in mostly foreigners. It’s such a common issue that the foreign women prostituted there are known as “Natashas.”
I heard a horrifying story from a friend about how one of her friends was almost kidnapped as a small child in Turkey by sex traffickers. In addition when another friend of mine went with her family to Turkey they had to wear headscarves to hide their blonde hair, as it attracts the kidnappers as well.
Turkey is a mess of crime. Not just sex trafficking, drug trafficking and more. They aren’t ready for the EU.

Nope, I didnt mean that I was having second thoughts about visiting istanbul bc of fear of being abducted, but that I was having 2nd thoughts bc i dont want to give my money to thugs and child trafficers.

I do not know, but here where I am we have already many Turks, to me it really does not matter who joins the EU.
I think the EU has some big problems to solve now before it can take on potential new big problems that might come with the membership of Turkey. Foreign policy and immigration policy are just two issues that need to get sorted out first. I think that will mean some changes in the structure of the union as well. Imagine having a border with ISIS with this structure and the lack of consensus on foreign policy.
I’d like to see them crack down on sex trafficking everywhere it exists. What a horrible thing to do to a person!
